Re: pH questions...Wineos Sugar wash
I do 32 gallon all grain ferments with and without backset. I throw in a handful with the yeast and let the party begin. Never have PH problems. Always in the sweet spot and always have shell specs in the squeezed grains. Shells are cheap. I say use them freely. You cant over do it. YMMV

Re: Crushed Oyster shell
A handful of shell grit in 5L. That's how much I'd probably use in 20L. Go for it  Shady is right. I use crushed shells on every all grain ferment with or without backset. One hand full in a 32 gallon batch and when I squeeze the grains there are still bits of shells visible. PH always sta...

Re: FLUTE TALK
A Flute is a bit of a complicated beast as Blue fish has eluded to earlier. The amount of heat, plate count, and the amount of reflux being the variables obviously. It's a dream machine that only time on water can teach operation technique to result. You really can go from pot still to vodka column ...

Re: How crucial is the amount of input yeast?
Spiff, I'm with Odin and the folks that like to measure the ingredients in a recipe. It allows the chef to repeat known wanted results. Some chefs have cooked long enough they don't need to measure because they can see and feel the proper amount of some ingredients to be added. There are advantages ...

Yup, start with files of varying shapes and sizes that fit the contour of the object being cleaned. Then use emery or steel wool to blend the scratches out. If you want to spend the time you can get your solder to be virtually invisible in your joints. Some folks do, some folks don't. Its a matter o...

Re: The Importance of a Crystal Clear Wash
I use the mop wringer and then cold crash the cloudy liquid. When I pump the clear off the top of the settled trub I usually end up with about 2/3rds of liquid volume that was added to the dry grains. Some of that liquid loss stays in the grain and some stays in the cold crash container. YMMV :eugeek:

NineInch, thanks for the input. Your idea is a bit more involved than I was thinking of. I was hoping to get a large canner, Presto makes a 23 quart for about $75, and be able to cook with one fill. I would use propane fired turkey cooker burner. Some of the steam threads around here are saying 3 ga...

Re: Question on boiler size
Flint, You don't necessarily have to fill the boiler in order to operate it and make good product. I'm thinking you could do the same batch size as the folks using keg stills then when you settle on the recipe you like you still have the capacity to do 30 gallons and fill an oak barrel for aging. This looks interesting. The capacity is stated at 22pounds. I would guess you will get approximately 2 to 2.5 gallons of liquid separated per 5 minute cycle. If it works as hoped for this process will take a bit longer than squeezing but a hell of a lot easier. Good luck with this adventure...…. :eu...
