Re: Greetings from Haida Gwaii

Welcome Pk3.

Always good to have more members from British Columbia

Do ya have any good salmon berry patches you can pick in the summer? Might be the first person to make a spirit from that :)

Ask good questions and best of luck on the adventure!

Dancing Star is US based which will make shipping/borders prohibitive.

I would also be interested in a local source.

Re: Easy Large Batch Mashing

Starch hydrolysis and conversation will continue throughout the fermentation process, also it increases the risk of infection.

Scooping and squeezing the cap also wouldn't eliminate a final squeeze as not all the material floats.

Re: I cut the boot off of my car with an angle grinder.

As a Brit I read boot as the rear storage compartment (trunk I believe in north american English). I was wondering why, imagining an accident following an attempt to use the car to prop up a workpiece. Imagine my disappointment when it turned out to be extreme parking fine avoidance. +1. Was...

Off to a good start from what I see.. just get some good packing, such as 1/4" size lava rocks Interesting! My neighbour told me I needed to get some ceramic saddles, but if surface area is the goal then porous lava rock makes a lot of sense. Where do you source that, fish supply store maybe? ...

Re: Ferment stock... ok to distill ?

Better option would have been to add more water at the beginning to bring it down to 1.08 or so. But it sounds like to me that this is one of those times when there's just too much out of place with the environment to get it completed. So yeah, you can run it, with the warning that It'll likely be q...

Some good advice given so far and overall a good looking build! A couple of suggestions though for your boiler. Suggest you add both drain and fill ports, this will make your life significantly better. These can done with triclamp fittings which makes for a very low maintenance setup. Links in my si...

Re: Easy Large Batch Mashing

Made my first batch using this method yesterday. I added all the corn on the first water addition (65lbs). Kept adding water until all 40 gallons of water were in. Definitely made some clumps on the first addition but they stirred out just fine once there was more water in the barrel. Still at 130*...

Re: Airing Out Distillate

An important aspect I haven't seen mentioned in this thread, what is the environment you're airing in? Temperature and humidity will make a big difference to how long you might air for. Example my workshop is ~63f and 40% humidity year round... Two days airing for me is right for me, but would proba...

Re: First Spirit Run

There's no reason to age in the cask at 60%, commercial distillers do this to save money on storage. Not sure where you got this nugget from but it's not true. The abv has an effect on the compounds extracted from the wood. By tuning the toast/char and abv you can turn the flavour profile of the wo...

Shouldn't be any glue in a barrel.... that said these appear to be display barrels regardless of what they're being sold as. Yeah, I wouldn't go back looking to swap... if you think they're nosey now just wait until you try to explain what you want. You'll get a similar answer to the above, i.e. that the fittings are designed for the pipe OD and the ferrule Is designed for the ID. The difference being the thickness of the...

Bought the cheapest corona mill on Amazon and replaced the handle with a hex bolt. That with my corded drill and a homer bucket cut to shape... and I've gone through hundreds of pounds of grain.

50lb to medium fine in about 7 minutes. Cheap and effective
