I'll go with "one that doesn't leak". If that glass ruins your whiskey it was probably ruined before it hit the glass

I use a Milwaukee MW102. It's a pretty good meter. If you buy a meter and find you constantly need to re-calibrate then you've probably wasted your money as it's not reliable.

Re: Aging in uncharred barrels

It does have an effect on the spirit, all negative. I would recommend browsing Amazon or EBay for some hardwood activated charcoal. You can filter the spirit with the charcoal to achieve what I believe you're looking for. Do some searching, you'll find a few threads on it.

Re: Storing an empty oak barrel

Just me : I'd rather have to rehydrate and retighten a barrel than risk water going funky and permeating my likker barrel if I couldn't refill it with likker right when I emptied it . +1. I heat my boiler to 150f and pump the hot water into the barrel till it's sunk. When the waters cool it usually...

Re: Stainless fabbers, need some advice on building a boiler

Due to basement ceiling height constraints (6.5') my boiler has to be short and wide (like a hockey puck) and there's nothing out there that I can find that can be adapted so I'm going to have to make it myself. All I have to weld with is a flux core 120V wire feed welder which does not have a gas ...

So it seems most general consensuses are rite ..Used barrels with added wood adjunct is the way to go... I believe it's a matter of taste. No so bad really. I find filling them with hot water, 150ish degrees and soaking them in hot water over night will swell them up just fine. I find this the case unless the barrel was unfit to hold liquid to begin with.

Thanks for the reminder, DFitz. This barrel looks like it could be taken apart and put back together pretty easily, nothing dainty about it. Sounds like I could get many uses from this thing. Re: A Tale of Two Barrels (and some jars)

Party at MCH'S!!!! Charred my BadMo barrel head today. I went over it very slowly with a torch, never allowing it to catch fire. I'm hoping that this heated it up good so that I get some toasting as well as the char, took about 15 minutes. Sticks are going in the oven now for toasting, I ...

Re: Aquarium heater/separate temp probe = bad with corn mash

Bread yeast doesn't ferment too well in the 70s. It likes temps in the 80s and lower 90s. I'd recommend checking some LHBS and see if anyone carries an American Whiskey yeast even 05 would be better than baking yeast and that's pretty easy to find.
