Re: home made PTFE gasket
I am still using my original one on my 4 gallon pot from 11 years ago - Just a few new wraps when I feel like it. Like Sadie, I also use on my glass aging jars.
I have started to melt a little beeswax on the gasket as well to help seal - don't like greedy angels

Re: Ginger Liquour
Just made a batch. Soaked 1/2 the ginger in 95% neutral for 3 days then added it and the rest to the boil. Used about 1/2 the sugar and diluted to 40% ABV. Tastes great and is sneaky strong, hence the name. Sorry can't get the pic right side up.... Note: when searching images for ginger haired women...

20231007_142305.jpg I have wanted to make this for years, but my smallest pot was 4 gallons. Since I did not want to only put a litre or so in that big a pot I did not make any. This week I finally had a thought that may help others without a small still. I had used a stainless steel bowl for the c...

Re: To barrel or not to barrel
Thanks for the replies. I thought the temperature swings in the sunroom would be a benefit but did not consider the lack of humidity. Even my other jars in that room have lost some volume but nothing like the barrel did. I have the barrel wrapped in plastic right now with a few litres of early HBB d...

20221021_130307.jpg 20221021_130316.jpg Hi all Looking for some opinions. Had 5 gallons of oat, wheat and rye in my barrel from Dec 15,2021 to Oct 15,2022 at 62% Stored in my sunroom which ranges from 45 to 60 degrees in winter and 60 to 110 in the summer(damn builders who said 1 a/c /Heat vent was ...

Re: Simple Asian rice alcohol
First a correction I typed unyeasted, not unheated for more than 3 days, thanks autocorrect. No gravities or PH taken, just 4kg of steamed rice and the rice leaven( a. Oryzae) then Angel yellow label after a few days has always worked. The last couple ferments that turned out good I added a teaspoon...

I will take the lack of response that no one disagrees with flushing, so it will go and fermenter will be bleached.
On to the next attempt which will not sit unheated for more than 3 days.

20220409_145234.jpg I have done the rice ferment about 6 times now successfully with the Angel rice leaven for 4 days before adding water and ec1118 or yellow label Angel. I have sweet rice wine clearing and rice wine ready for distillation. This last time something went sideways. I left the rice 7...

20220223_212354.jpg Quick update, sealed great. A suggestion for those of us without a press to install the barrel head. I put the head in the refrigerator for 1/2 hour after waxing the edge. Got my mini torch out and heated the edge of the baine marie for a few passes. Head dropped in and a couple...

20220221_124527.jpg Badmotivator, thanks for all the details on construction. Enjoyed making the circle cutting jig for the table saw and the sanding jig. Re: Just Post a Pick of your Rig
After 9 years, went from a 4 gallon stock pot on a cadco hotplate to a 8 gallon pot on propane last spring. This winter learned that does not work in an unheated unplumbed garage in Ontario so followed Jimbos electric thread and now happily run a 16 gallon pot with 5500watt 220v volt element with 10...

Thanks for the input - wish I had bought the oak sooner but hindsight is always 20/20
I will try using the backset on enough wood for 2 barrel heads that way not a total loss if it does not pan out.
Might be 6 or 8 months before I know the answer though.....

Re: The Badmotivator Bain-Marie and Oak Barrel
Me again😀 Earlier in this thread Bad Motivator and Corene did some tests on trying to speed up seasoning of oak. I was doing a spirit run today and wondered if soaking the oak in hot backseat and rinsing would help remove the bad stuff and leave the good? After 1 rain, my oak has already leached out...

Too late for this run, but will try it the next time.
Latest mash wasn't boiled either so I am sure the infection will be back.
Cheers, Rod01

Stripping it right now. 1) could not get past my brewing habits so could not bring myself to put sugar on that. That was only 7 days from yeast pitch(I used Angel) 2) checked supplies and was out of sugar! Bleached fermenter and started another oats, wheat and rye mash ! Grains were cheap so no real...

Sugarhead after lacto?
Did a search but did not find an answer(honest I really did). Would it be worth it to try a sugarhead off these grains after this lacto(hopefully) infection? The wash smells great, almost fruity. It was all grain oat, wheat and rye with 1/2 the 24 pounds of grains in 10 gallons home malted. Fermented...

Totally agree that nothing beats time for properly aged spirits, but nuking does give an indication of future goodness.

All good - was just trying to show poster a non-plastic solution to use the jar he had.
Took a minutes to remove the spout, sand a cork for a minute or 2 and no time to wrap the tie around it. I have the ptfe sheets for my mason jars

The TSC corn I get is bad too. I made a sieve to get rid if the dust, chaff and broken kernels before I grind it. Get about 1/2 pound of crap for every 10 pounds I sieve.
