Re: Straining grain questions?
So after fermenting is complete, how much wort is there compared to the original amount of water used? For example, I used 5 gallons of water to begin with. About how much will I have after grains are strained off? Reason I ask is I have a 10 gallon still and enough grain to start a second ferment. ...

Straining grain questions?
First off, I used the search function and don’t doubt my questions have been answered but I did not find them. I mashed my first all grain last night and am fermenting on the grain but do not want to distill on the grain. After mashing and putting in my fermenter, it appears as though I have 4 ½ gal...

Re: Grain Bill & Diastatic power of brand whiskey
Ha ha. The simplest answer is most often correct. I had 2 and 6 row stuck in my brain cause that's what is most often seen in homebrew stores and online.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Grain Bill & Diastatic power of brand whiskey
I've noticed a lot of whiskey's from the store have a grain bill of 10 - 15% malt. If these grain bills are using a 6 row with a high diastatic power the DP per pound of grain is still about 18 -27 DP/pound. Everything I've read on here says DP should be 30/pound at a bare minium and most recipes ar...

Questions about developing recipes
What things are critical in a mash and how much do you need? I know you need sugar, yeast, and water at a minimum. I've also read that there needs to be nutrients for the yeast. Sometimes these are with the yeast and these nutrients may or may not be included with the same source as the sugar. Say I...

Re: Rum: light and dark from the same batch - theory
Youll find it more logical to make the light rum first as your first batch will not have any dunder. Just just settle on a recipe and git makin. After you git you operation cycling you can start tweeking to suit your vision. So for the second batch, would one then use more molasses and less sugar a...

Re: Rum: light and dark from the same batch - theory
I don't like your theory, as it implies that full flavored rums are "dirty", and they're not. You can make a clean, light rum by using more sugar and less molasses, or distilling to a higher ABV in a reflux still. You can also make a clean, full-flavored(IE: heavy) rum the same way, but u...

Re: My name is Chris, and I have a problem...
Welcome aboard. What kind of column and boiler did you buy? What ate you wanting to make with it? Good luck be safe take your time. I bought a used stainless 10 gal boiler. I bought the column from Brewhaus. Just a basic column, not reflux or anything. I like to drink pretty much anything except sc...

and its not drinking liquor. It's the fact that I think, for some reason, anything I can do myself I need to do myself.....and that's why I'm here. I've looked at doing my own distilling for sometime but for some reason I never started. Silly me. Now I've purchased a boiler and a column and will hop...

?'s about columns
Here is what I think I know, and if this is wrong someone please correct me. The difference between pot, reflux, and fractionating stills is the column. Pot stills having a shorter open column, fractionating stills with a long column with lots of packing, and a reflux being somewhere in between. Pot...
