I also wonder if anyone has brewed a beer then put it through a brief distillation after primary fermentation to remove foreshots and heads and then gave it the secondary and conditioning leg and what the results were? FYI I'm several (5+) iterations in on a brown sugar wash (Adapted pugirum's from the "tried and true"), and the mid-late tails has developed an amazing rum taste. Since it sounds like you've got a head start already, I might suggest starting with something like that instead of a simple sug...

I use one of those portable induction plates. I don't think they would be the best for trying to run a reflux column because they cycle on/off to produce the lower power outputs (even if it doesn't explicitly say that it cycles, I would bet that it does at that price range).
