Re: Buying sugar and not looking like its for distilling

You think you get funny looks for buying sugar? Try buying two sacks of corn, asking for the stuff without soybean oil, and possibly a bucket of feed molasses...while wearing slacks and a tie and loading it into a little Toyota commuter car.

I just spread apple wood chips on a cookie sheet and heat in the oven at 350 for several hours. I get plenty of flavor and color. I leave the charcoal for the grill. :)

I've done a sugar head over Booners, but I used corn sugar instead of cane. It cost a little more but has none of the bite. 50# of corn sugar (look for dextrose) runs about $35 at Cash N Carry.

That looks like a lot of rigging. Couldn't you just set up a water flow sensor to cut the source of heat if the coolant flow fails? That would catch a variety of problems beyond simple pump failure.

I'm sure the yeast would enjoy some raisins. I'm not sure if they are necessary but they don't hurt anything. For more of an all-corn experience, try corn sugar instead of cane. It has a much smoother finish. Not sure I've ever come across corn sugar, but I will look for it. Thanks. Often it is lis...

Oh yeah. I tried to make a rice vodka once. The liquid enzymes shredded the cooked grain till it turned to sludge. A strainer like this would have been invaluable.

There is a difficulty with setting a control to check your research. How do you take samples from the same batch, to eliminate variances between runs, and side by side compare natural aged to your process?

I'd just like to be able to freely give away what I make. You know... Once it's drinkable.... I don't like your chances of that happening. Stilling is legal here in NZ and we can't give it away. Hey Rev, What your doing is the UJSSM method. A great way to reuse all that grain and yeast. And it gets better with each generation ! It's not uncommon for brewers to go up to 10 gen this way. I realize it is more like UJSSM than Booners but since I fermented on top of this recipe I figured it wou...

If you are serious about making ethanol for any kind of process, you need a device for ethanol, not water. When you distill water you primarily are trying to leave behind solids like salts and minerals. With ethanol you want the water to stay behind too. Different temp range, boiler requirements, et...

The coffee filters are good for the initial airing out but after a day or two you need to seal the container otherwise your alcohol will evaporate. Did you check the final proof on that stuff that sat open for 6 weeks. I use a carboy with a natural cork stopper and age for as long as I can stand it....
