Re: determining wine and proof gallons by weight
Hi Ryan, If you need to specifically use the ttb gauging manual to meet legal requirements, as some others before you have requested, I can't help you. But if you are interested in solving this problem in a scientific manner, I probably have all this data in formulas derived from the International A...

Re: Azeo is 97.2%ABV
Here is a much better formula:
%ABW = 0.8225461635345204 *x - 0.0007912419651469305 * x^2+
0.000025170469315263712 x^3
where x = %ABV
Maximum error is 0.3% at x=90
%ABW = 0.8225461635345204 *x - 0.0007912419651469305 * x^2+
0.000025170469315263712 x^3

Re: Azeo is 97.2%ABV
Hi Crow, Here is a formula: %ABW = 0.9538839570686711 + 0.6799353140478662 * x + 0.0029456109658481753 * x^2 where X is %ABV at 20 degrees C. It is accurate to +/- 0.5% except at very low %ABW (0 to 5%) and very high (around azeo) where it is off by 1%. You can see this because when X = 0, the resul...

Re: Airing question
Humidity doesn't affect upon evaporation Wow my observation is in damp cold conditions I can safely air for a week and in hot dry conditions I will lose volume in hours, my jars are always loosely covered with their lid to both keep nats out and reduce loss. I do age/air stuff in glass lid stock po...

Re: Airing question
rad, the relative water humidity of your air has little effect on the rate of evaporation of ethanol; the relative ethanol humidity is always 0%, so ethanol evaporation is always at the max. Or, put another way, the ethanol partial pressure of the air in your house is zero, except, of course, in the...

Re: Airing question
+1, shadylane That rate of evaporation doesn't jibe with my experience, rad. In fact, ethanol seems to evaporate so slowly that it calls for some speculation as to why. My theory is that, since ethanol vapour is heavier than air, a cushion of vapour forms on the top of the liquid up to the top of th...

I use boiling water to dissolve the sugar, then use a jet nozzle on a hose to fill up the fermenter. The jet produces lots of foam and bubbles.

Hi SP,Swedish Pride wrote:alcohol is flammable above 40%, so here its advocated to dilute down to at least 40% so your boiler charge isn't flammable.
I strip down to 30% so a non issue for me
Note that alcohol is flammable above 40% at room temperature. Even wine is flammable when it's boiling.

I was proposing the peer-to-peer idea as a way to relieve the newbie-questions burnout that some old-timers claim to be suffering. Finding a solution to a problem rather than being told is very satisfying for anyone learning something new, and for a newbie, these aren't old tired questions; they're ...
