Re: Why we don't use lead

In England In medieval times, many people thought tomato's were poisoness after quite a few people died over a short period. when infact it was the pewter plate used to serve the tomato's was to blame because of the reaction to the lead by the acidity of the tomato.

Do some research and have a go at building your own still, you'll learn more about the distilling process and it's more fun. :D

There was some guy on here, a Medical Student , was using a glass carboy as a boiler.

A load of people screamed at him not to use glass, but this guy new better.

The end of the story is......One shattered carboy and one badly burned Med Student.....ironic isn't it.

Re: Need help buying first still.

It's a lot cheaper if you do some research and build your own still. Also you will learn alot more about this craft along the way.

I built a potstill with a liebig condenser and with other things like a fermenter , hydrometers, aquarium heater, etc.... was up and running for around £90

For safety reasons you should dilute the spirit down to 40% or below.

This link is to a calculator of dillution.

I would be very careful buying from outside the UK, if the seller doesn't come up with the goods then it would be difficult getting a refund.

I don't fit airlocks with sugar washes because my fermenter isn't airtight. I've never had a wash go bad yet.

Re: Hello from the UK

Hello Guys, my total setup from building a potstill with liebig condenser to fermenting gear, hydrometer, etc came to £90

It is a lot cheaper making your own.

I did have enough copper tube from fitting my bathroom suite, so the price of the copper isn't included in the total.

And, yes you really don't need the thermometer. But, I did add one to mine. Even just for stripping runs I like to watch what it is doing. I take detailed notes. It helped me learn my still. I took notice of what has been said many a time on the forum by people who know what they are talking about....

I always reply to these threads. Without the knowledgable peeps on HomeDistiller, i would have probably blown myself up or had some sort of poisoning from either the likker or the fuel I was going to use for heating the still. A big thankyou from me. You all run a good, safe and tight ship. keep it ...

Re: Newbie looking for some answers...

For £50 you could have bought a high quality 17 litre/ 3 gallon stainless steel stockpot from Makro and made your own condenser.

I think you will regret buying a pressure cooker because of the small volume it holds. After cuts you will only get about a jam jar of spirit.

Where's the logic.....spending hours soldering up parts of the pot still and condenser so there is no leaks, then drill a hole in it to add a thermometer.
