Second run alcohol percentage
Hi Folks forgive my ignorance as I usually use a reflux still and sugar washers for neturals but have recently purchased a stainless Steel pot sill with a high-ish narrow stainless steel cap almost like a very small fractioning column. I have never made corn whiskeys, bourbons etc but am beginning m...

Re: Methanol in sugar washes
I think that has been my problem I usually only do one wash every two months or so, and just being a tad to greedy with the cuts, Think its time to start taking it off in 500ml jars and getting more familiar with it. Redistilling the heads and tails with the next wash and keep a good quaility wash c...

Methanol in sugar washes
I have read a lot about methanol on this site, I was once told you don't get methanol in a sugar wash or at least not enough to harm you. Does this include all sugars molasses etc?

Re: SUGAR HEAD RUN ISSUE
15 minutes is good these reflux stills in NZ ard designed to be left and checked twice an hour, no flame just an element inside even the instruction videos say it? I couuld understand if I were doing it with an open flame I might monitor it. What about my cloudy issue?

SUGAR HEAD RUN ISSUE
Ran a sugar wash through my reflux still last night, checked it every 15 min's or so, came out and at one stage thecooling hose had come loose, vapour everywhere, hooked her back up and kept going once finished I diluted it with water to 40 percent, this morning looked at it and it was very very sli...

Re: Converting starch
I have just read about malting barley, is there a simple recipe using malted barley in the tried and true receipes ? Starting with malted barley. Would be an easier way. And more consistent. And there isn't a specific section on malting and mashing. You will just have to search for AG threads. Or ma...

Converting starch
Hi Folks,
Here's the thing I don't get, If we are trying to convert starch out of the grains and adding emzimes to extract the sugar, why aren't we just using sugar in the first instance? why mess around with sprouting, malting etc

Re: Bakers Yeast
Thanks Chris that will come in handy come summer! Stirred up a DWWB on Saturday with an OG of 1.077 using Fleischmanns Active Bread Yeast. SG today is 1.03 with big burps on the airlock every three seconds. So my DWWG beer is doing quite well. At this rate I should reach 1.00 in the next day or so. ...

Re: Bakers Yeast
Thanks the different yeasts for fruit etc will come in handy. I do usually use red or white wine yeasts for my fruit but usually leave them as wines. I have about 5 peach trees that I get a lot of peach's off in the summer. I must find a good recepie on this forum to make a run with them or maybe ju...

Yep, I did tell him distilling but your'd be right, just another way to sell his wares, I did use what is our equililant to Red Star here (I guess) in New Zealand here which is Edmonds baking yeast on the Birdwatchers wash and it comes out ok, but still can taste that tomatoe paste coming through. Hi Folks' I have been making a neutral with the turbo yeast and sugar wash, I am very, very inexperienced in using grains/corn (never done it). I want to be able to make a fairly decent neutral with no funky smells, I am interested in making a run using Molasis or Potatoes as these are the easiest fo...
