Re: Plates or Caps???
If you don't want to research it and come up with your own conclusion from the available info. On plated stills. The best person I know of to ask that has ran both would be Rockchucker22. He has built an ran both perforated plates and bubblecap plates. Usually people will make one or the other. Nev...

Re: Plates or Caps???
DoD, as PP said, buy the premades they are slick, I am going to use the compleate units I ordered awhile ago, and man do they save time and issues, and yes I have made a few sets of plates already so I have been there, the feeling is great to make them yourself but, just sayin! @benstick - So ...

Re: Plates or Caps???
I'm assuming you mean a perforated plate when you say plates. And a bubblecap plate when you say caps? If you are talking under a packed column. There won't be much if any difference in performance between the two. The packed column will dictate the flavor profile. Not the plates. You can see my se...

Re: Plates or Caps???
Well that went over like a ton of bricks... Let me ask this then to maybe soften the field... How much better has your product been since you started using your still with the plates? For those of you with the caps... same question. If you have a still with plates or caps, do you think g...

Plates or Caps???
I LOVE my Mile Hi tower, but I am considering looking into purchasing either an add on from Still Dragon with the bubble caps, or just buying a new Hillbilly Still with the plates and sight glass. For those of you who have tried one or the other, which seem to work better? Caps? Or Plates? I have a ...

Re: HawkingRage StillDragon Tower
Wondering... could you see what was happening on the bubble plates/caps? It seems like the Sight glass isn't as cool as i would want it to be if I couldn't actually see what was happening on the plate/caps.

Re: Am I missing something???
It may sound like I am looking for some easy way of distilling. Although it would be nice, that's not really what I'm looking for. Rather looking for some solid pointers with little "lingo" that is easy to follow. The Tried and True Recipes are great, and I'm trying one now, but often ther...

Re: Am I missing something???
If you had distilling for dummys you would be back here asking why it didn't work. There is to much to know to put in a step by step thread. There is more then enough info here in many different threads to get you safely started. The new distiller reading lounge should be your section to read. Mr. ...

Am I missing something???
So, what I think I might be missing here is a complete step by step guide for some simple mash's and runs. Is there such a thing as a "Distilling for Dummies"thread that I'm missing? I have been able to piece a few things together from numerous threads, but I would love to see a rather sim...

Just started a Corn/Barley Whiskey Mash. This should be great!!! No turbo yeast for me this time. Going about it with distillers yeast. I will observe and report.

Re: Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!!
""I cut it down to 37%. Very smooth"" "cuts is not diluting ,,not in this case .its taking off in fores/heads/hearts/tales. this simply removing the bad from the good.. Ahhhh.... I did not "cut". I should have though. About 10 ounces in, I took a small sample, and...

Re: Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!!
Did you make cuts? I did. I cut it down to 37%. Very smooth, yet still maintained its richness. I kept a little bit of 75% for cooking with. Ok, so what was the size of the wash, % abv and what were the % abv cuts and amounts? Forgive me, the only answer I have for you is the wash size, which was 6...

Re: Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!!
Congrats on your first run. Did you build the thumper? Or is this something new mile high is selling. And a turbo wash I wouldn't really call a rum. I mean technically it could be called a rum made from sugar cane. But it won't be the same as rum. And if you think that OS good. Wait till you try a ...

Re: Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!!
Ok guys... is it always this simple? That depends... does it smell at all like nail polish remover? Will your skeptical girlfriend/wife/partner/whatever drink it? Success with distilling is somewhat subjective. I would be very surprised that would be able to get great product from your first run. T...

Re: Actual ramifications of getting busted
I spoke with a local Attorney who represents a number of Medical MJ shops about home distilling, and he did some research. He found only a handful of cases where the fullest extent of the law was handed to a offender... all of which were during prohibition. Since prohibition, according to his resear...

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!!!
Using one of Mile Hi Distilling's 8 gallon pot still with a 3 gallon thumper... 150 proof sweet tasty rum. It was fantastic. Was a little scared of using the thumper for my first run, but I figured I had nothing to lose, besides 18 lbs of sugar and a bag of turbo. It took about an hour and a half to...

Re: Milk Mash???
If all you ran was sugar and turbo yeast then you really have nothing there. Yeasties need nutrients to be happy. No nutrients = over stressed yeasties that don't do the job you put them there to do. Add 8 oz of tomato paste and dump the turbo yeast, just use bakers yeast Check out the tired and tr...

Milk Mash???
So I'm running a 18 lb sugar, with 4 ounces turbo yeast. It didn't seem to bubble and hiss all that much. I thought it was probably because my room was only 71 degrees. I waited and waited till the airlock stopped popping and ran some clearing agent through it. It is now a yellow milky substance and...
