Re: Oak vs. Other Woods

I can add from traditional sources and personal experience mulberry wood for brandy (palinca), it is used as wood sticks in glass or as barrels. It must be at least 1 year old and seasoned because the sap is slightly toxic. The flavor and color is excellent.

Very high output for that rig! Be careful to not overheat and have bad cuts.

Re: One rig fits all? Minimize equipment usage to the bone!

it will work, no doubt about it, but when I distill, usually I use 4 plastic barrel fermenter, each with a volume equal to my payload of the potstill, because the resulting stripping run will let me make the final run in one go. But I do it outdoor, so probably in your case it is better to wait more...

Just don't use mathematics; I was there and I did that. There are so many variables in real life, that an algorithm is close to impossible. Use some verified schematics and it will be ok.

Re: Pot still design

I like your sketch, but it is not complete; I will assume that you don't use any diaphragm/scrubbers etc. in the vapor path. If this is the case, then move the angle of condenser from 90 to 45 degree and it will work ok if you provide sufficient amount of cooling water.

Re: Hello from Istanbul, Turkey

Fennifasyl, I don't know your current laws in Turkey, but you might not want to post a picture of yourself. With that being said, there is a lot of good info on this sight, if RAKI is like a brandy, you probably want to build you a potstill they are simple and you can find several different builds ...

Hello FenniFaysal, and welcome. I make brandy (Raki) for some time, but usually drink them without added flavour. What kind of rig you use? I heard that coppersmithing in Turkey is alive and well so I suppose it is something build locally .

Re: mulberry sticks, slivovitz

never use fresh mulberry wood; every part of a mulberry tree, except the ripe fruits are mildly toxic (and hallucinogenic, but with a bad trip) so, you can use only dry heartwood for barrels or the inside of branches larger than 10 cm for sticks to use in glass containers.

Something is missing...I don't know what rig you use, but if it's a pot still, running it twice will give you a superior distillate.

I dunno what to say, but water and molten metal is not a good combination + I think it will cool the tin under it and it will not flow.

in this case, insulation means that you must make a hydraulic stop between the first and the second water-table.

sorry, don't get me wrong but I can't compute the data for this. Maybe you can ask a neighbour about the water table and the insulation, but what can I say is that : Cl ; clorhine ; bleach ; ....etc is not a solution for maintaining a well sustainable.

you didn't say anything about: what kind of insulation against the first phreatic water? and what distribution of water table you have in your area. I can provide a solution if I know the variables.

We need to shock our well to help minimize the rotten egg smell we sometimes get. I've looked it up but was wondering if any member has does this before. All I plan on doing is opening up the well, dropping 1.5 liters of bleach and then recirculating the well water using the garden hose to make sur...

Maybe your fermentation is finished? Check the taste of your wash...however, if you added water-sugar solution and commercial yest in the same wash, you MUST have some new activity.

copper pot tinning

I must re-tin my big copper pot (50 liter) for making a canned food named zakuska (zacusca), it contain a lot of tomato and it is too acidic to be safe for use with pure copper pot. I bought pure tin ingot (99.9%), put the pot on charcoal, and started tinning, but the cotton I have don't resist well...

it is also influenced by the type of rig you use, and how you are driving it, so I don't think it's a general chart.
