water quality

I am getting closer to my first mash. I am planning on running a pot still to make whiskey. How important is water quality? I am on a well that does have some iron in it. Other than that it is OK. Can I use it or should I buy bottled water? Do I need distilled or spring or what...?

water quality

I was wondering about the water used for the mash. Do most use distilled, tap , well water or what. I am on a well that the water has some iron in it. What would be my best choice?

Re: Safe and not so safe metals question

It does not specify what is in it. It says for all plumbing projects, ASTM certified to ANSI/NSF61. Also ASTM B32

Re: Safe and not so safe metals question

I was going to start soldering my parts together to build a pot still today. However, I was reading a post this morning, that I can't find now, that said just because the solder package says "lead free" does not mean it is safe! Something called 'antimoniv' I think. Now I don't trust my so...

Re: Pot still design

I am now looking at a 1" x 20" riser reducing to 3/8 ID coil. Does this sound sufficient, at least for a first go? Mike

Re: First build 99% done

Just wondering, if you fill the worm bucket with ice, will that not last for a run? Mike

Re: 1" Column 36 qt Potstill

How is the 1" riser working for you? I just bought materials for a 1"x20" riser today. Plan to 90 off then start reducing down to 3/8 ID coil. Thanks, Mike

Pot still design

I am looking at a 5 to 8 gal still with 1/2 in coil. What diameter riser would I need, how tall, and does the coil need to start from the top or the side, as in a tee? This site is great and I am getting to the nitty gritty...
