For alcohol related places... Buffalo Bayou brewing, 8th Wonder, St Arnolds brewery, Yellow Rose Distilling, Whitmeyer's, and Gulf Coast Distillers. The museum district is nice, as is Nasa (It's quite the drive from downtown) and there are plenty of strip clubs. On a more serious note, as a local Ho...

Maybe acquire a used Buon Vino Super Jet Wine Filter off eBay and swap out any nylon parts with alcohol friendly hdpe plastic or stainless and ethanol approved hoses? You'll likely need quite a few filter pads.

Re: Large oil/steam jacketed boiler questions
I have the same steam boiler unit in the first picture on post 1, however, mine is certainly not 350L in size though. The unit It's rated at 1 bar. As others have said fill up to ensure the elements stay covered in liquid and you have a low pressure cooker that can handle on the grain. The biggest i...

7bruno7, My point about the steam and supersaturated steam and element levels, was that perhaps your water levels are dropping below the element creating small "explosions" when condensation hits the dry elements. Again just a thought. Can you you share a pick of you rig? Maybe we can get ...

So on my boiler, I close the bottom valve, fill from the top valve until water starts to come out of the middle valve. You definitely want to make sure that the elements aren't dry firing or not immersed completely. That super saturated steam might be taking water below you element level. I have not...

Support your local brew stores. Retail space isn't cheap, and they aren't getting rich selling brewer supplies and grain. They are hurting, they can't compete with the Amazon. The big mail order brew shops like Northern and Midwest are owned by Big Beer such as Gambrinus and AHB subsidiaries. I give...

It's likely caramelized sugars and char from the wood. 1 year in a small new charred barrel might have a bit of a strong barrel flavor for some people's taste preferences, but as long as your monitoring flavor, I'm sure it'l be fine. Here is a barrel of mine, it's not first use, but you can see the ...

Making 100% unmalted rye in the mash tun as we speak. I'm using a 2lb-1gal grain water ratio. Rye has been milled to flour. 1. Correct the water PH to 5.2 2. Dough in in at 115F and hold for an hour, added ViscoSEB L 3. Heat mash to 185F hold for 1.5 hours, Add SEBstar HTL at 130F on the way up to 1...

I bought a new A/C window unit that I opened up, and bent the copper cooling coils over the edge of an 100 quart igloo cooler. I setup a submersible temperature probe to automate the window A/C unit on/off at 40 degrees F. I then use a submersible pump to cycle water from the igloo to a 50 gallon po...

Re: How important is Backset?
I do not use backset, and as a former DSP, we did not use backset. Baking soda/oyster shells and citric acid can help you adjust your small all grain mashes just fine to stay within the right fermentation range. The thing with backset, is you usually have to keep it going and replenish batch after b...

I would buy a 4" end cap and fill the column all the way to the top with a hot citric acid solution and let it soak for 30-60 minutes then break it down and rinse out with clean water then do a a sacrificial sugar run.

The problem with oils are that they are far less responsive to adjustments to jacket temperature. I have heard of people using peanut oil and/or heat transfer oil. Both are expensive when used in large amounts. I use water. No oils or glycols. Just fill your jacket about 1/3 of the way with water. f...

So I have never done fruits and I think you make some valuable points about specific skins/seeds/pits, I would imagine that they can effect the distillate both negatively or positively depending of with ones you are working with.
