Re: Brazilian Wood for Aging Cachaças

I discovered Cachacas about 12 months ago at a Brazilian Steak House. Love it! To me, it is a cross between really good rum and tequila. Personally, a good caiprinha drink showcases the Cachacas at it's best. Simply muddle 1/2 a lime with 2 tps of sugar in a shaker. Add 2 oz of Cachacas and ice. Sh...

Re: anyone distilling cachaça?

Try the google search on here....there’s a very good article on how the Brazilians run their pot still to make cachaca (verify spelling :)). I used it as a guide when distilling a panella based rum. Turned out fantastic.
Search panella as well....lot in common with sugar cane juice

Well...gonna give it a go. Been doing 24 gallon mashes...but always come up 1 keg charge stripping run short of a spirit run. Jumping to 36-40 gal....80-100# grain. Ever since I bought that grain mill....conversion has been so much better. Not quite as easy to strain as cracked corn, but my second a...

Home Depot still sells rolls of the unfinished, Windy posted a link in a different thead. I bought 25 feet of the 1/2 inch...they had 3/4 as well, but no 5/8 (that Dad recommends for 3” pipe). The yellow covering comes off extremely easy in that style

Any results yet Jimbo? I grabbed some carbon through Brewhaus and followed their pdf for setup. Mine is way shorter SS, but put a valve on the outlet so I can control rate. I was starting with a pretty good neutral anyway....but 1 pass really made a difference....no smell at all. I too have some lef...

Ready to start mashing tonight....no clue how the flavors will mesh though. Not being a beer brewer, don't have any experience with the dark/roasted grains.....but that's half the fun. The real question is weather to double run in the pot, where I'm more comfortable in my cuts.....or go with the flu...

Sounds good. It's always over the 4th of July weekend. Just give it a google search (Algona Freedom Rally) to see if it's something you'd be interested in. I plan to go every year....haven't had a bad time yet :) Usually some great music too.....Saving Abel and Montgomery Gentry this year.

Algona Iowa Freedom Rally

Started thinking how many people from Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri etc attend this rally....out of 20,000 people, a few of the members here must be among them. I guess I should have posted BEFORE the event...but still curious. I know I saw more than a few mason jars in attendance.

Re: S-Cack's Booner inspired AG Sweet Feed Recipe

No...didn't mill it, great point, sure that also adds to poor conversion....and likely could gum up a mill. Keep meaning to build a hammer mill for the corn, but suppose I'd also have to purchase a roller mill for the other grain. As the drink keeps getting better....makes me want to experiment with...

possible repeat ? on aging/over oaking

I've got a pretty good grasp on the basics....but still a little confusion between these ears. Lots of threads on here that cover the gammut as far as oaking/aging. I guess I'd like more info on what the commercial guys do (from those in the know) and then maybe I can come up with a plan from there....

Was sipping on some of mine that started aging Dec 1st....so about 6 months. I thought it had a very deep taste...but still a hint rough, not much....but there. Another 6 months on glass could make it pretty special. I made mine with the standard Tractor Supply, sweetfeed mix....but mashed with enzy...

Thanks for bumping this back up, warp1, I was just wondering what to do with the rest of my sugar. I was inspired by this thread last year to order up a box of Sugar Daddy and make a rum. I love the rum, but now I want to experiment with the molasses and panela in separate batches. This reminds me ...

No worries HDNB.....been doing AG for just over a year now. Only sugar heads anymore are the run-backs on the grain and when I do Rhum. I keep a little bite to mine when I double pot still....but my preference is stripping run and spirit on a 3 plate column....get rid of more heads that way ..... an...

measuring proof after oak aging

Well....couldn't find a conclusive answer...so need some help again. I remember early in my learning, I read on here somewhere that you couldn't use a hydrometer after oak aging due to the solids that the oak would add....throwing off the SG. So I just used the dilution calculator to hit my mark (62...
