Re: السلام عليكم from.......well you can probably guess :)

A more powerful burner will get your boiler up to speed quicker, but when the first drips come out you can choose to continue at high speed for stripping, or at low speed for an output that can be cut. Stripping runs cannot be cut because the heads/hearts/tails are completely mixed up...there will b...

Re: السلام عليكم from.......well you can probably guess :)

Hi, I figured I left quite a bit behind; but I wasn't sure what was going on, since the temp dropped and the distillate stopped flowing. I figured I was better off safe than sorry later on. I still have some 100L of wash (mostly TPW from the recipes I found floating around) to play with, and I've a...

Re: Bobbing Alcometer

The bobbing is caused either by turbulence of the incoming stream, or variations in the alc content. Ram a stainless scrubber into the bottom of the parrot to calm the influx. If this does not work then your alcometer is reading the true alc fluctuations.

Re: solder w/ cig lighter?

I solder 3" pipes with a lighter all the time. Solder is like candle wax...lick the flame on a brick of solder and the solder drips off. Let some of the drips fall into the joint and even the thickest coppa is jointed...easily as strong as candle wax on a girder. OK; I use the lighter to light ...

Re: need your feedback on column....

Feedback on a column happens according to the thermometer. Heat input, the coolant flow, and the boiler mix all play their part in the thermometer temp. Columns work according to a thermometer. Pot stills work according to ABV. Gaskets must seal against leaks...no leaks allowed in any still...do wha...

Re: Concrete boiler

There's foamed concrete, and concrete mixed with styrofoam and other stuff. Replace the aggregate with air holes and you have insulation.

I used plaster-of-paris mixed 50/50 with vermiculite. This can be smeared on and built up layer by layer. A chicken wire mesh inside will make a strong shell.

Re: How much packing do you use in a Bokakob?

The slower and cooler the ferment, the more care needed against infection. Beer and wine brewers have to take extra care for brews going on for months. Brewing for the still is fast and dirty...lots of yeast...higher temps...all done in two or three weeks. Infections can't get a leg in, but the brew...

Re: How much packing do you use in a Bokakob?

Yes clean those scrubbers; 24 hrs seems too much, just 1 hour should let the vinegar do it's thing. Pack the scrubbers in tight enough so that you can breathe easily through the column or as Rad says, ' provide decent functionality' :) . Extremely tight packing may inhibit breathing. Fake scrubbbers...

Start with the purest hearts you can. Hearts are for drinkin, but they can be adulterated with heads and tails for taste...more or less according to taste or greed.

Re: Have a quick question.

+1 moosemilk. Any pot will do 90% in the early stage if you run it slow enough. but pots are not made for this. A reflux still should do 95% easily when it's run slow. Running slow increases the ABV regardless of the still. Do it with what you have. Tune your still as best you can while not forgetti...

Re: Distillers activated carbon

I find distillers activated carbon very useful. It's not a filter as such, more of an absorber of smells and flavors that pass through the finest filters. The best way to use activated carbon is to add a small quantity to the container of spirit and let it stand for a few days weeks or months. The h...

Basically any heat source will do. If the source is weak it will run continuously and if it's strong it will cycle on and off if it has a thermostat. An airtight box is as inportant as the insulation. Lights are not the best energy wise unless they are heat lamps. Here's mine, outside is a digital t...

All-Grain washes struggle to get enough sugar to be a problem. Sugar washes can go as high as you dare. Yeasts are naturally coded for A-G, but not yeasts genetically modified either by forced selection or gene therapy. Treat your sugar wash like an A-G. Do as the A-G's do with your sugar wash and y...

Re: About flux

Lead-free-flux must mean the flux used for lead-free-soft-solder. These fluxes are either acidic zinc chloride, or the rosin type as used in electronics. The rosin type leaves a more stubborn residue, but is nowhere as good as the zinc chloride for big chunks of copper. Rosin is best for electronics...

Re: Who keeps there heads and who tosses them

Early heads are best done once only along with the foreshots. They take the longest time every time, so take the time the first time. I try hard to get the purest foreshots and early heads the first time, and happily toss them never to be done again. Late heads should be the transition between heads...

Great idea Odin! Corn syrup is the cheapest sugar available in the US thanks to subsidies. May not work in Oz because we subsidise or protect the sugar cane enough to add it to petrol.

Re: Cuts by ABV

Cuts by ABV applies to pot stilling what outputs a variable ABV. The range of ABV depends on the ABV of the charge in the boiler and the speed of the drips coming out the condenser. Reflux stilling outputs a constant ABV in the mid-90's ABV, but heads/hearts/tails can be smeared beyond recognition e...

You found it out! Re-running hearts will give better hearts. This is because you took another cut out of the heads and tails no matter how little they are. With due care and attention the re-run can be got before the re-run. Until then, a re-run is often faster and better than any other after-treatm...

A thermometer on a pot still can tell you one thing...the difference between the ambient temp and when the hot vapors hit the thermometer. The numbers on the thermometer have no meaning after they have done this. Caressing the apparatus by hand leads to the same result. If you feel the top of the bo...

Re: Thanks againplus need help

With a pot still your ABV is steadily declining. With a reflux still your ABV is all 95%+....but both of them need cuts to find the hearts. Ferment whatever you have and let your still make the cuts more easier to do. Get the heads out pure as possible. Take the hearts free of heads and tails. Tails...
