WOW,
Could you post some pics of the internal workings and some basic dimensions. Titanic of a job, hope your hydrometer sinks to the bottom.

Re: Need some HELP understanding this design...
The picture of your drawing is similar (in a manner of speaking) to my still, other than the boiler design. I can reach 95% quite easily, granted column is much higher and I use copper scrubs. The internal is coil increases reflux and also acts as a gate to the product condenser. ps. (the hand drawn...

Re: The proof is in the Bird, BIRDWATCHERS THAT IS
BW is one of those washes I can throw together and forget. I do use less tomato paste though, but apart from that, its the original recipe. Its never let me down... how much tomato less could I get away with? I use approx 1 cup for a 6kg/26ltr wash, not that it's a bad thing it does not s...

Re: The proof is in the Bird, BIRDWATCHERS THAT IS
I've been one of those stuck with using turbo yeast. After finding this forum I see what I've been doing wrong. Will be trying BW next time :-) But for curiosities sake, is the demerra supposed to give more flavour and make it less neutral? my first wash was with 2kg Demerra and the rum flavour doe...

No fancy brewers yeast, just bakers yeast, mix up the sugar bill with some Demerra or all Demerra for that matter and sit back beside the fire with Old Yeller beside you or a Cat if your so inclined and drift away.

The proof is in the Bird, BIRDWATCHERS THAT IS
So here is another testament of the awesomeness and reliability of the BW recipe. My first BW sugar wash consisted of the following 4kg white 2kg demerra 1 cup tomato paste juice of 1 lemon 8-9 tablespoons fleischmann's bread yeast This fermented out in 8 days and took 3 days to somewhat clear outsi...

I have read many a post on cutting your distillate down and everything I read I hear mix your water with alcohol, key word being "water" . I read an article on another site on cutting your spirits down and the main reason for clouding seems to be adding water to your spirits, it was explai...

Re: First new still run (water vinegar)
quick update on the 100% reflux with the internal condenser opened wide up there is an extremely small amount of distillate @94% coming out, I think if the condenser passed by the opening to the liebig you could totally put this into 100% reflux. As it is now the condenser sits 3" above the ope...

that's an awful lot of potatoes for a relatively small sized mash ...is it even possible to mash 25 kg of potatoes in 30 L of water? ....and you're only mashing with 1kg of malt? :wtf: I think those recipes might need a little work on the DP average. Only one way to find out, I was happy to just fi...

hey there, I just finished running 60 ltr's of non drinkable homemade wine, most of the wine came out between 90-94% and let me tell you "IT TASTED LIKE SHIT". I thought at first is was going to be ok, but the wine flavours are overwhelming and hard on the nose and pallet. It has been a we...

re starting your still
so the question is, what happens if I have to stop distilling for what ever reason, is a matter of a simple start up and continue where I left off? Re: First reflux column
do you have a vent on the top ? I use gas for mine as well and find it works awesome. OK, I see the vent on the main column, should it not be on the condenser column? where all the action happens.
Looks nice and clean, great job.

Re: New CM still I built myself!
hey there, what is the % of your distillate ? do you have a few copper scrubbies up the main column ? that would increase your reflux but it looks as if your main column is about an 1" to 1 1/4". From what I have read and seen just about ANY design has capability to distill, it's just how ...

Re: First new still run (water vinegar)
I hear what your saying, but I don't think a valve is needed, my second run came out ay 93% (1 run) with the added reflux, so that is telling me that what vapour is leaving is quite high % wise. I totally get the vapour control with the valve but with 93% abv. return on a first run it really makes m...

Re: copper packing(to clean or not)
thank you, I would think the copper would acquire a residue build up and not allow the surface area to influence the subsequent distillations, but I guess that could be said for the still as well. It would be a good experiment to do several runs of the same recipe with and without cleaning. cheers, ...

copper packing(to clean or not)
I have read in the HD forum that there is no need to clean the copper packing. Would it not make sense to remove any nasty build up on the copper and have a fresh start for every new run? I would think the build up would influence any future runs. I use citric acid then a water rinse to clean mine a...
