Re: Pálinka - The Fruit's Spirit
I love your post, it's so informative and full of info I've never seen before! I had some palinka in Germany that a guy had picked up while visiting Hungary. He said it was made from bison grass. I don't know if that was true or not as I've never tried any bison grass spirit before, but I could tell...

very nice work! what type of solder and torch do you use? I like your specification on male/female connector placement to eliminate the possibility of leaks. never thought of that before.

Re: shine not wine?
Also most of the compounds that are present in the foreshots affect you by being metabolized through the same pathways as ethanol. So when drinking large quantities of wine, the low dilutions of methanol, acetone, etc. in comparison to the ethanol don't affect you as much. My cell bio professor told...

where do the 2 vertical downcomer tubes lead to? the way I am viewing it, it looks like they are going back to the boiler, which is confusing me. I'm sure that I'm just not understanding it completely but it sure looks very interesting and innovative and once I make sense of it I'll probably be even...

Re: Shotgun condenser question.
Hey Litebread, can I ask you how you attached your SS flanges to the copper pipe? Did you freeze the ferrule and heat the pipe to get it to fit? and once it was in the pipe, how did you solder it? I will be doing this soon for my new still because I just can't get EZ flanges to be straight enough - ...

Re: Screwed the pooch somewhere
it's pretty easy to put in an electric heating element, I'd do that. My 5gal boiler has a 1.5 kwatt element that works great. should solve your problem. Or since you're running it outside, use a propane burner for power. That would work even better but just be sure you are able to really fine tune t...

Re: Thumper design
Wouldn't all the thumper liquid just drain into your input pipe and end up in your boiler? Well maybe not all of it, but all the liquid at the level of the input pipe would. Or do you intend to somehow put a 90 degree elbow on the inside of the thumper? that would keep it from draining if you were t...

Re: Data from a New Distiller
moaltar, is that pic from after you diluted to 40%? or was that the 60% that was with the apple wood? Reason I ask is the 60% whiskey I've aged before has been much darker than that (I guess the light color could also be from the low aging time). I really like this thread. I'm currently majoring in ...

Re: Concentrating wash by add cacl2 or other dryng agent...
you can't replicate distillation with a drying agent... but if you want to concentrate your mash without distilling you should freeze it in a bottle-necked container and let it thaw upside down over a collection jar. The alcohol has a lower melting point so it will melt and drip down before the wate...

Yes I intend to use 2" piping throughout. I agree that it may be a bit too large but I plan on using the same set of pipes when I eventually upgrade to a keg boiler so that's why I want to use 2".

Here is a drawing I just made for my new still plan. (not strictly to scale) http://i.imgur.com/5oUX5yb.png Right now it's just the 5 gal milk can with 1" pipe coming off original lid and to a flake stand (3/8") at a 45 degree angle. It's served me well for around 10 runs this past 6 month...

Re: Blue Vineagar - Cleaning Run
Blue color comes from the copper. In this case, with vinegar, it is probably copper acetate. As the inside of the pipe gets oxidized with use, this will stop happening. The oxide layer that forms from the heat and oxygen will protect the "fresh" copper underneath.

Re: Copper Fittings versus Bending
If you know any electricians a conduit bender would help you out. The salt is a good help too. Both should make a really nice bend. Really? I've used them but I would think that copper would be more prone to kinking. But I guess with enough packing it could work. Also has anyone ever bent 2" p...

Trying this method out with various fruits... soaking in 65-70 ABV birdwatcher's sugar wash.
From left to right: peach, strawberry & kiwi, just strawberry, pear, pineapple, blueberry, blackberry, and the jar on the end is some fire piss.

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
Can anyone explain what it means to collect to X % ABV? For example, when you say collect to 70%, does that mean you are collecting everything that comes out (after the foreshots) in a single test jar with a hydrometer and watching the hydrometer reading fall? This would give you one volume with 70...

Thanks guys. Yes i did save about 1.25 gal of backset for this next batch, and it sure smells great. Also yes I did do cleaning runs. Can anyone suggest where I can get lots of small collection containers? Should I go to a thrift store and get a bunch of shot glasses? or not quite that small?

First run with my homemade milk can still
Did my first run ever, it was about 4 gal of ujssm that had been sitting for around 2 months because I severely misjudged when my still would be ready to run (learned a lesson: never start a ferment if you don't know exactly when you're going to be able to run it). Well I finally got it ready to run...

Ok that looks like a good option, a few questions: How do you pair up an element with a fitting?
