Re: Weighing the Legal Risks
If I didn't hear this straight from one of the moderators I'd think it was paranoid foolishness, but apparently this site is monitored by law enforcement. To what degree I don't know, but I was informed of this by a moderator in relation to posts that give away any personal information. Did the rest...

Re: Weighing the Legal Risks
Yeah, the only thing people love more than hearing a good secret is sharing it. Was just talking to my Dad today. He lives about 45 min away in the country. Anyway, was telling him about all this and asked if he was interested in doing a little father and son thing with a proper-sized still. His nex...

Re: Weighing the Legal Risks
That sounds like a good way to do it. I'm looking at the short, fat 375 ml bottles from Tuthilltown Spririts that might do the trick. 2.50 each is a pretty good price too.
Might even get fancy and dip the tops in wax.

Re: Taters Kahlua
Just made this recipe but used a cup of light brown sugar and a half cup of dark brown sugar. Also did the extra step of caramelizing it. Just tasted it and it tastes like coffee-molasses liqueur. Yep, molasses flavor is really dominating. Should have gone with lighter sugar. It's so strong I think...

Yeah, I'm learning. In this case I learned not to tell knuckleheads. Lemme ask you though, do you share your stuff with friends or family or do you drink it all yourself?

Thanks for the feedback guys. Yeah, I think I'll just make my own. Thanks for that recipe too. I can't believe all the essences out there. Here are just some I found on one site Bourbon Essence Brandy Essence Whiskey Essence Rum Essence Scotch Essence Enhancer Essence (what the hell could that be?) ...

Hey there Walkindoggy, you give it I'll give it right back. But maybe you've got a point about the six shooters. Like how you said that. Figured you guys'd jump all over my ass about the police commissioner thing but nobody said a word. It's what everyone's been saying, "Don't tell anybody.&quo...

Re: Small Barrel Aging - A Bourbon and a Spiced Rum
I don't follow. Are you criticizing me for not building my own? Of course I could build my own. I've got pretty decent abilities in that area. But I want something small, compact, and sleek. I can build a still, but it will look like a goddam octopus and take up half the kitchen. I don't live in the...

Re: Weighing the Legal Risks
Yeah, but anyone who gets busted for anything feels wronged, and that the punishment doesn't fit the crime. So imagine me busted, with a really compelling story of how the system screwed me, and you can all sympathize and feel bad for me, but there I am, still screwed. And yet, I think I'm gonna go ...

I was just imagining myself in that scene from blow with Johnny Depp's character addressing the judge. Depp: "In all honesty, i don't feel that what I've done is a crime. And I think it's illogical, and irresponsible for you to sentence me to prison. Because when you think about it, what did I ...

Re: Weighing the Legal Risks
Ok, so you can make much-much better stuff; I gotta say that's pretty exciting to imagine how much better it could be - but this news about home distillers getting busted for personal use, it's a real wet blanket. Also, not being able to share what I make with anybody? That's more than half the fun....

Weighing the Legal Risks
So I came to this forum with a simple barrel aging project I've been doing where I buy unaged whiskey and age it in small barrels for kicks. I've gotten a lot of great information from everyone and everyone's been encouraging me to build or buy my own still. I'm pretty close to convinced but just lo...

Re: Some questions on buying my first still
Any thoughts on those little Mr. Distiller systems or the Alembic distillers?
I'm looking for something small enough where I can use it inside (stovetop or on a hotplate).

Some questions on buying my first still
I've thought about it and decided that I'd prefer to buy my first still as opposed to trying to build one and need some guidance on what to get and where. I'd like to be able to make rum and whiskey at around 60% abv so I can barrel age it. I'd also like to make nuetral spirits that I can use in liq...

Re: Small Barrel Aging - A Bourbon and a Spiced Rum
Alright, I think I'm pretty well-sold. I don't feel comfortable at this point making my own distiller and am looking around at what's for sale on the internet. Going to go ahead and post a question about distillers in another part of the forum but if you have any advice on purchasing one it'd be gre...

Any good quality Spiced Rum Essences out there?
I've been seeing these websites that offer all types of essences for rums, bourbons, etc. and I was wondering what the prevailing wisdom is on these things. Are they crap or have some of these companies really nailed it? In particular I'm looking for a good quality Spiced Rum Essence. I'm making a s...

Re: Small Barrel Aging - A Bourbon and a Spiced Rum
Davewatkins - I was going through the equations and I got stuck. You wrote: 3L(X%abv)=1.875L(.505)+.375L(.60)+.750L(.625) So I multiplied 1.875 x .505 and so on and got the following numbers: .944, .225, .469 Which I added together, getting 1.64 where it appears you got 1.83 After dividing by three,...

Re: Small Barrel Aging - A Bourbon and a Spiced Rum
Husker - Thanks. Yeah, the more I learn about this, the less satisfied I am with not learning to ferment and distill. It's all just a bit, intimidating I guess. Is it really true that commercial distillers don't make cuts? So good products like Maker's and Knob Creek can really be bested by home dis...

Small Barrel Aging
About a month ago I purchased two 3 Liter barrels to try aging a bourbon and a rum (to make into a spiced rum) and though it's a project many of you may roll your eyes a bit at, it's opened up this whole world to me and I think has been a good way to begin. I went into this not knowing anything abou...

Re: Small Barrel Aging - A Bourbon and a Spiced Rum
Thanks. Eventually I do hope to learn how to ferment, build or purchase a distillation unit, and begin experimenting with cuts - but I've found that with any hobby, if you make it too complicated, you'll never get around to it - and for me, this feels like a good start. Besides, it'll give me someth...

Re: Small Barrel Aging - Two Schools of Thought?
Dude, I think you nailed it and just answered a whole bunch of questions for me at once. The other questions I was dealing with is why do all the liqueur recipies say to leave it in a glass bottle for a month or so and why do they say to shake it regularly. I asked those in other places and got a lo...
