Re: Jimbo's Absinthe
Thanks bushman. Looks like he never came back and gave us his recipe. I'll keep my eye peeled. And another beautiful absinthe dispenser artwork thing there, wow. I must get me one of them. Devotus' recipe: http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=28658 - must say it worked great for ...

Re: My first absinthe
Please folks I need help. It’s going to be my first Absinthe run ever. I do have 30 liter stainless steel electric (2500w, controled) keg still with boka design, the column is stainless steel. Do I still need to fill the column with a copper mesh? Or keep it empty? Does it affect the taste? Another...

Re: Birdwatchers sugar wash recipe
Hey guys! I made my first BW wash about 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to have gone as I hoped. For the past week there has been little to no action in fermenting. I measured the SG and its about 1.050 :-( Not sure of the % but I guess somewhere in the range of 4-6%. Any idea of what we...

Hello Powerfull!
I found that it was easier to understand a lot of the things in those massive threads after trying the stuff out myself. Then when I read it again, I could relate better to most of what the guys were saying.

Thanks for this post Bushman. The amount of information on this web is sometimes overwhelming.
Can't wait to be making a fine product, even though the journey will be long.

Re: My first absinthe
I would be willing to trade some time for a column lol
But definitely trying that essence when I finish the next wash. Since I haven't had a real absinthe it's hard to really know what taste I'm going for Will be fun to see what this project turns into

Re: My first absinthe
The brew shop has that essence, so maybe I'll try it and see how it goes.
But my main interest is to make my own absinthe out of my herbs, without the use of essences. Always fun if you manage to make something good

Re: My first absinthe
Interesting. For the sake of testing your herb mixture, why don't you just get some grain alcohol, cut it down to 55% and infuse with herbs, then cut it down to 40% abv then re-distill that. You'll get a clearer picture if your mix is good without blaming the alcohol. Hey King of Hearts! ...

Thank you very much for that comment, Durace!! So next time, I should for example make a few 1l batches of absinthe, using different recipes? Re: My first absinthe
Hey Gonzo I actually have to edit my conclusion - the glass i had was just a few hours after distilling the product, and honestly, I couldn't drink it. The next day I found that the smell had gotten better so I had another glass which tasted quite nicely! I then went back to read what had been said ...

Re: The proof is in the Bird, BIRDWATCHERS THAT IS
I've been one of those stuck with using turbo yeast. After finding this forum I see what I've been doing wrong.
Will be trying BW next time
But for curiosities sake, is the demerra supposed to give more flavour and make it less neutral?

My first absinthe
Yesterday, I completed my first absinthe. The recipe was: 75 gr. anise 75. gr. fennel 25. gr. wormwood 1l 75% Coloring: 2-3 gr. hyssop 2-3 gr. lemon balm I let the herbs macerate for about 48h. I only have an airstill so I was afraid of burning the herbs in the still. My understanding is that you sh...

Re: Getting the most out of an Air Still
You will just have to adjust to the ABV you can get. There ain't much more you can do. If you can't make it with what you have. Or get a reflux still that will produce what you need. Wish I could get a reflux.. Just isn't available here and I sure can't build one :( Glad I found this site, else I w...

Re: Getting the most out of an Air Still
That is correct, you really don't need more than that, even for absinthe. Most of the commercial examples have been getting higher and higher proof in recent years. If you look at old bottles of absinthe they are mostly below 65% ABV, some as low as 45% ABV so you should be fine at 79%. If you feel...

Re: Getting the most out of an Air Still
Hey guys.
Just to be sure, when using my air still, I should not distill anything stronger than 40%?
I am planning on making some absinthe, so I really need the strong stuff . So far I've only managed to get to about 79%.
