Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

Thanks bc, working backwards I see that I'm only getting a 1/2 % of ABV from my molasses. I did use 4lbs of brown sugar in my wash and it appears that's where all my alcohol from. Seems I should be getting a lot more from the Molasses. It will at least be contributing to flavor, but something must b...

Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

I have gotten low ABV washes (6.6) with my washes with it finishing out at 1.030. Only have done two washes to date, following the recipe to a "T". It's ferment is crazy busy I think if you attached a trumpet to the bubblers you'd get music. But it stops at around 24, or less, hours each t...

Re: Pugi's Rum or "Pugirum"

Well, I've had success as a novice distiller on UJSSM, so I thought I branch out and make some of Pugi's Rum. Found a nearby feed store that sold me feed molasses at .20 cents/lb which gave me about 5 gals for 8 bucks. After reading the thread, I worried about it being sulfured, or having a preserva...

Love the still, but was wondering about the connection just above the letter D. Looks like a rubber inner tube which securing it. Not sure why that wouldn't be a soldered joint,,, unless you have a boka head or something to switch out and use the common still connection for both. If it were me, I'd ...

Hello RacksnQuacks, If you haven't already put together a design, there are several in the New to Distillation section with plans. Looks good. I don't think the Liebig's inlet/outlet nipples will be that much of a bother. Might even work out better for you directing the hoses to either side of the still. I couldn't see well enough to be sure, but are you going to make the "easy flange" for attaching to a sanke keg, or...

Look in the "Tried and True" section for recipes. I've learned it is best to first crawl, then walk... and later run. You'll get a kick out of watching the first few drops roll out. Enjoy! I agree, The Uncle Jessies Simple Sour Mash recipe is a great starter wash. It trains your nose and ...

Folks will want to know what you want to make: Whiskey, rum, or Brandy. Maybe you want a vodka, gin, neutral? So give the group an idea on what you want to end up with, and they will suggest the best still for that purpose. But all this info is in the New Distiller's section that is a must read, sev...

DB, If you build your own, (potstill) you can do it for just over 100 USD. The Samohon's Potstill plans is what I used. I have no more than most basic construction skills, had never soldered, and found it easy, and very fun to build. And, the guys at the plumming supply store are friendly....

Hi Mike, give the UJSSM recipe in the tried and true section a read. The spent grains (corn) are the grey/white pieces you find on top of yhe barm. They are obviously more pale than the brite yellow corn below. Those pale pieces are removed and replaced by fresh. The backset of your distill is used ...

i personally keep the tails of the stripping run (down to just below 20%ABV) to include in my Spirit Runs. I believe good ethanol remains in these and can be used. They also contribute good flavors. Welcome.

Yes, Xnerd. That's the way it happens. Particularly if you get into a routine with something like UJSM. I spent almost an entire year trying to track down a burning /off taste in everything I distilled..that also later developed a sort of metalic taste. Tried different yeast..etc. Different temps.....
