Re: New Take on a Great Design... ODs Magic Flute - Mark 2.
Hi just a pup. I used old dogs mark 2 as the basis for my build. But just for the way it looks mostly. Although i didnt use the weir type plate system. I too reviewed old dogs results for disabling the plates and deemed it wasn't worth it to have the system. A flavourful whiskey can be had by 3 plat...

It's attached to the column as a butt weld for support. It does not loop the system.

Re: First 4" Flute
Thanks Hobby and Yes PP. I fill it through the site glass ports. The thought of flooding occurred to me but doesn't seem to be an issue. The down comers appear to still be very functional even with a few rashig rings in them.

Re: First 4" Flute
Thanks MR. I used 1/4" rashig rings. There are 6" between the plates so each plate holds roughly a litre of packing. But i'm thinking of adding a triclamp between the plate tree and thermo. I'd like to just put a packed column below the deflag instead of messing around removing the rings f...

First 4" Flute
Thanks to Old Dog for opening up a new world for all of us. You should be proud of what you accomplished... Heres what I come up with using the style of OD's MK2 for inspiration. -4" column and 3 hand built easy flange site glasses -3 bubble plates with 2" upcomers, 3" (handmade) caps...

Re: PF's flute build
Interesting idea PF but would an accurately placed J tube be easier and do the same thing? Placing the bottom bend of the j tube so that it is touching the centre support would allow the returning distillate to run down the centre support minimizing disturbance. From what I've seen in all the other ...

Re: The Worlds Oldest Rum
The woman giving the tour at the havana club in cuba said that they didn't really know how old some of the rum that was blended into the bottle was but they figured it was in the 50 to 80 year old range. some of the casks that went into the maximo product dated back from before Batista was dictator....

Re: FLUTE TALK
what if the length of the column above the dephleg was extended higher before the 180 degree bend so that the bottom of the final condenser was set above the location of the top plate in the column? could the product take off at the the bottom of the final condenser be split, running all or part of ...

Re: FLUTE TALK
Ok I suppose what I am asking is; Can the reflux be to cool in temperature? I understand that the temps at the boiler are higher and as u go up the column the temps reduce. Just wondering if too much cool reflux returning to the plates could be detrimental?

Re: FLUTE TALK
Does the temperature and amount of reflux returning to the top plate have any effect on plate function? Like too cold, too much returning distillate might deactivate the top plate?

Quick question about reflux
Not sure if this has been discussed on this forum. I have built a pot still with a column. in the column I've used marbles. i Ran it with a simple sugar/distillers yeast and nutrient/water wash. It started at 83% after i took 150 mls of fore shots off. levelled off at 80% for most of the run. I got ...

Re: My first run...need advice on blending
I m kind of new to the blending my self. But i think if you would of recorded the distillation temperature at each jar you collected, that would help your blending decisions along. You will most likely have to just smell it and taste it. assuming you threw away enough of the heads and you want to bl...

My first Valved reflux
Hi all. I'm new to the site and i sure am glad to be here i'm learning quite a lot i must say. I had built this valved reflux a number of years ago (from the Building a World Class Distillation Apparatus site). I think it was modelled after the Nixon/Stone off set head design. Only a few pictures ha...

Pleased to meet you
Hello from somewhere in Canada. I've been lurking around this site for a week or so and I must say, there certainly is some intelligence in the ranks here. After reading numerous threads, it turns out that a few things I know turned out to be things I didn't really know. I'm thoroughly enjoying myse...
