I used a 3/4 tube for my parrot & a 1 X 3/4 cup. No problems what so ever. I should have made the tube shorter so the hydrometer would peek out the top. I could then gently set the hydrometer to the bottom of the tube.

I had the smoke from the ammeter too. I disconnected the ammeter & just ran it. Kinda like running a pot still without a thermometer. Works for me!

What does the feed store call this stuff? They use the same generic bag for most of their grains, but have a different sew-on tags for each type.

Throw away the thermometer, turn up the heat & do more reading. Keep it safe.

Jholmz, Start the water as soon as you turn on the heat. Just a little cooling will keep you from being surprised when the condensate starts flowing. Once things get cooking you can dial in the heat & cooling. You have lots of power available. Practice to see how many amps give the required flow...

I was thinking of making dog treats with spent grain. Maybe not such a good idea.

If you think listening to the airlock on a fermenter is therapeutic, you might be a stiller.

Overheating to 190 shouldn't matter as long as malt isn't added until the temp is down to 152. Also 1/2# of malt isn't enough to convert that much grain. Generally you need a pound of 6 row malt for every 5 pounds of grain.

I wish I would have seen this before I built mine! it would have saved 3 trips to the hardware store & 1 to the electronics store. THAT is a very complete kit. I would add an on/off switch.
