Re: Let's see your controller box
Here's an update on mine, it's not wired up just yet. Haven't decided if I'm going to place an analog meter above the controls yet. I did not mount anything on the lid of the box. That way I could position all of the wiring & not disturb it when putting on the lid. Otherwise it would be like si...

My biggest mistake was not starting to distill 20 years ago! But I wouldn't have had help from the forum. But I could have some good age on some whiskey. I know, woulda, coulda shoulda.

Re: My First AllGrain Bill
Flaked maize might gelatinize at 165 in 15 minutes, because flaked grain is steamed (cooked) before it is rolled into flakes. If it doesn't fully convert, try more temp & more time. The 1.06 SG means you did a good job of getting the starch into solution. I use coarse corn meal, soak it at 195 f...

Re: Parrot Beak Tube Diameter
I used a 3/4 tube for my parrot & a 1 X 3/4 cup. No problems what so ever. I should have made the tube shorter so the hydrometer would peek out the top. I could then gently set the hydrometer to the bottom of the tube.

It's usually a matter of 'want to'. Homer Hickam wrote October Sky (good movie too). He was a poor math student, yet taught himself calculus by reading the book. That is doing it the hard way!

I had the smoke from the ammeter too. I disconnected the ammeter & just ran it. Kinda like running a pot still without a thermometer. Works for me!

Corene1,
What does the feed store call this stuff? They use the same generic bag for most of their grains, but have a different sew-on tags for each type.

Jholmz, Start the water as soon as you turn on the heat. Just a little cooling will keep you from being surprised when the condensate starts flowing. Once things get cooking you can dial in the heat & cooling. You have lots of power available. Practice to see how many amps give the required flow...

Re: Incomplete Starch conversion
Overheating to 190 shouldn't matter as long as malt isn't added until the temp is down to 152. Also 1/2# of malt isn't enough to convert that much grain. Generally you need a pound of 6 row malt for every 5 pounds of grain.

I picked two of the 5 gallon Balcones barrels from my local brew shop. $85 each. They were used for their blue corn whiskey. They are very well made.

Pay attention to the amp AND voltage ratings on fuses. I lost a bet that a 5 amp fuse is a 5 amp fuse. We tore apart a 125 volt & a 250 volt fuse of the same amp rating. They are physically different sized elements! Theo, you actually won that bet. 5A AC is 5A AC regardless of voltage. AC and D...

There are 2 electricity rates where I am. The higher rate is $0.10 per kilowatt hour. Using an 8 gal boiler with 2 1500w elements, here are the costs to run 70 liters (about 18 us gals): 3 stripping runs of 23l at 2 hours each, using 3000w = 18KWH plus a 10 hour spirit run at 2000w = 20KWH for a to...
