Re: Any other bikers?

11000 miles! Awesome. I thought I did a lot at 5k. I've been doing alot of Zwift this time if year, though I did my first outdoor road ride 2 days ago. That Specialized frame I had cracked at the drop outs a couple years ago (height of the pandemic) and I put the DA group set on a Felt frame. The fr...

Yes. If you can get the coating off. The small gas feed lines, sold at the Depot(for a stove or water heater) will not come off, where as the big rolls of it, normally for commercial use, will skin right off with a knife.

Yes...Oyster shells (calcium Carbonate) will not dissolve into solution without an acidic environment. That's why it's slow to work, It need's time to break down. Being a beer brewer, I don't use it 'cause it's too slow and unpredictable. That's why I use calcium hydroxide, it's immediate. I guess a...

Re: Ph crashes in sugar washes

Personally, I wouldn't bring PH down only to have it drop further with fermentation. Knowing it's gonna crash, I'll even add Calcium hydroxide to raise it a bit anticipating the crash. Yes, the yeast prefers 5.6 or so, but we're not making beer, and a sugar wash isn't the best environment for yeast ...

Re: Ph crashes in sugar washes

You should really have a PH meter to use it, but I would us a teaspoon to start (About 2.5- 3grams).
If it's after fermentation is under weigh, sanitize equipment and definitely stir gently. It works almost instantly, so you don't have to wait that long.
Be careful using it, It's potent stuff.

I'm just getting over it for the 2nd time. 1st time was Mid March, I had all the classic symptoms, fever, aches, and a foggy head for 2 weeks. And I just got my first shot the week before to boot. About 3 weeks after, I received the 2nd shot. About 2 weeks ago, I felt like I had a mild cold, but wen...

Re: Ph crashes in sugar washes

Shells are effective in small washes (5-15gal) but I found they did not dissolve fast enough in bigger (100/300) ones to prevent a ph crash. Try powder calcium carbonate instead of sodium bicarbonate. Not good to add all the salt. Also a ph of 3.9 is just fine. You will get good flavor, less chance...

Re: Pick a Spring (Water?)

Personally, I like #1. You can always add salts to bring your mash to the PH you want, and hit the water profile your shooting for, especially an all grain mash. If it was a sugar wash, I would definitely use #2. because sugar has no buffering capabilities, and always causes a PH crash. When I make ...

Why have a 60" column if your not going to pack it the whole way? The taller the better for purity.
If it's a Boka, start an inch or so below the bottom plate.

Re: FLUTE TALK

Running stripped washes is why your ABV is so high, along with 4 plates. Like everyone mentioned, plates are great for 1 and done runs.
I would take those strippings and add them to your next beer, and run it on 2 plates.
***2 plates is just my personal preference.***

1- I don't know about FOG on the lower plate, I feel the sections, and when the heat is rising, turn on/up deflag, and wait for plates to load. 2-Don't try to over power the deflag. With bubble caps, I look for lively bubbles just above the caps. 3-Don't worry about equilibrium too much in a bubble ...

Even open air convection with a good heatsink will do. I run my fans at half voltage to make them silent and have no issues.

I think a building an insulated box with a small ceramic heater, run by an stc, is your best bet. Especially in temperatures your talking about.

Re: AG Brew in a Bag volume vs grain

How big is the dead space under the bottom? Maybe make bigger batch so there is more water above the bottom and the water to grain
ratio isn't too diluted. What I did was buy a BIAB that fit the whole kettle. They'll custom make it for any size.

Re: homer buckets for fermenting

Home brewers use 6.5 gallon buckets for 5 gallon batches. Usually 5.5 gallons in, with a half gallon loss to yeast/trub and a gallon headspace for
krausen.
That being said, you can use whatever you want, as long as it's food grade. Look for this symbol.

Interesting, I didn't know the yeast would fall out of solution first so it would be on the bottom That's why they use conicals for beer, so the yeast can be drawn off the bottom, and leave clean beer. With that grain bill, I don't think the yeast will separate. If it does, drain it off. If it does...
