Re: UK distilling IS legal!!

There is spirytus. But when looking at rectifying you're losing a lot of profit unless you do something a bit different to what's out there on the market so you can put the price up such as may be doing a range of flavoured vodkas or liqueurs.

Power and condenser calculations

Okay when I've built a few pot stills before (and I helped a friend build a packed column) and I've never really taken into account for calculations, but I am this time wanting to build a beauty (bubble-capped/perforated) in which I want to invest some considerable amount of time and money into it's...

Re: Mead wash, pectin & methanol

To Prairiepiss; yes they are removed (unless you do things to taste like some of the old German spirits where they kept a lot in for a good stiff one). I was saying it was good to know as it is a cleaner product for that reason, as any bit of information is good to know but it's nice to know that so...

Re: Mead wash, pectin & methanol

Also if you want to be fancy and get proper mead yeast you can get a greater yield of hearts and a better product as a lot of the honey complexity is destroyed in fermentation with other yeasts.

You should try the Bochet mead brandy (lovely caramel notes) if you can get some cheap enough, is Tallow a more US honey?

Re: UK distilling IS legal!!

Depends if it was heather whiskey that might not been so bad. HMRC like; clarity, procedure, appearance, lack of responsibility, and money. If you can provide all five of those they'll almost give you a handshake and a clap on the back :). Funny you mention Argyll as I've just bought an Argyll jacke...

Re: Mead wash, pectin & methanol

Thanks D for the input, I found out some more stuff, honey does contain pectin but it is basically negligible as it's like 1:1000000 parts. It's different with different honeys Heather tends to the highest but again it's minute so production of methanol and other bi-products is much less than in gra...

Re: UK distilling IS legal!!

Hi forum, I've been talking regularly to HMRC about setting up a micro-distillery, there is a by-law that is now present which directly concerns smaller ''commercial or educational'' distilleries but it is very hidden and not put directly on the licence lists set out by HMRC. But I'll put my experie...

Re: Still production

Indeed I am; I've got everything apart from the licence and the still now and I want to make sure it is aesthetic but also that it does the job. I just thought I'd ask some the wiser men than me at engineering but I think the guy in this manufacturers sales department was wrong about it producing a ...

Still production

Hi guys, I am currently looking for a 250 gallon still to buy and have found one but the production rate they gave me on the quote seems far too slow, they said it will produce a gallon of 96% in an hour, considering the wash will be 18% mead and therefore they'll be 180 litres of pure alcohol (incl...

Mead wash, pectin & methanol

Hi forum,

I am wondering if anyone out there can tell me or give me a link preferably to information on how much pectin is in honey and/or approximation on the amount of methanol produced whilst in fermentation.

Many thanks.

Re: alcotec whisky yeast packet

There are plenty of websites that give good instructions on how to make sake just follow the same, over in the orient they use koji-kin with pretty much everything to make alcohol; potatoes, grains (rice, barley, wheat, sorghum), there is even styles of beer called third beers which are done by ferm...

Re: alcotec whisky yeast packet

I know this is a very late reply to this thread but I thought it might come in useful to people. I have recently tried the whisky alcotec yeast with an oat malt whisky, it didn't work very well not for flavour wise it is brilliant flavour wise but the alcohol didn't come out very high (not enough en...

Re: Bochet honey spirit/brandy

Sorry guys for not posting on here much recently just been caught up in Uni work. Also to taste I don't really remove that many of the heads either, this is due to honey having basically next to no pectin so a lot of the lower BP compounds aren't produced in the same quantity as fruit and grain wash...

Re: Bochet honey spirit/brandy

Yeah Jim is right bees are usually docile we quite often go in without gloves and sometimes without suits (do not do until you know your bees), you can get bad breeding though one year that can make them slightly more aggressive, try and get an Hawaiian strain they are a good one to start with. And ...

Re: Bochet honey spirit/brandy

Bees that live in cold areas will have to hibernate for the winter months (also period most likely to be attacked by rodents too), as long as you build/buy a decent hive they should be okay if they are in a sheltered spot, some people put thermal jackets (do not however block up any important holes,...

Re: Bochet honey spirit/brandy

Cedar has anti fungal properties, which; firstly increases the service time of your boxes, and secondly helps prevent some diseases associated with rotting hives. We have pine ones too which are much cheaper but still far more expensive than in the states or mainland Europe. :/ You should check them...

Re: Bochet honey spirit/brandy

I think you may have taken the wrong edge of things, the reason why it is the governments fault in an island nation is because they shouldn't have allowed for the import of foreign cheaper hives which so happened to be infected with vorroa which thus spread across the UK since, however the Governmen...

Re: Bochet honey spirit/brandy

Well I'm still on going with the distillation I tell you what, the end product is really good, but the F'''ing mess it has left in the still (not to mention the pipes) is ridiculous, it'll probably disappear with boiling water though. It looks like the mead was about 7-9% looking at the outcome (sho...

Re: Bochet honey spirit/brandy

There's plenty of city hives, some people think they have the best honey as they can get access to specimen plants that people grow in their small gardens. And to the amount of honey produced it really depends on how many brood boxes and supers you have a friend of ours can get 180lbs but then he ha...

Re: Bochet honey spirit/brandy

Yeah by the sounds of it it might be cheaper in the US doing that but over here it's more expensive keeping the bees!!! It's ridiculous. Obviously for health benefits raw honey is the best, and tastes so good coming out of the extractor.

Re: Bochet honey spirit/brandy

The way I look at honey is a bit like whiskey, there are many different malts and then you can blend them to get different characters in the end product. The same can be said for honeys, if you mix you'll get different hints from different types. If you're going for a bochet mead then I wouldn't bot...

Re: Dried herbs and absinthe

Yeah when distilling I only put in the holy trinity but I also put some more in after the distillation for the maceration, depending on on how high a percentage you want to go do the distilling on your herbs either on the second run or the third of your brandy (that is if your doing a white grape br...
