Re: Alembic Style Pot Still Head
Version 2.0 Got rid of the short 3/4" pipe lyne arm. took a 2" copper tube cut out a wedge and tapered it down from 2" to 3/4 inch. I will add a liebig condenser later. The total length of the Lyne arm shown is 34" inches (86 centimeters) The outlet is a 3/4" female threaded...

Re: Granulated Feed Molasses
I just went and did a solubility test on the stuff and it was at least 2/3 soluble in hot water and that is without any kind of boil. and there was a lot of molasses flavor and smell in the liquid. I've used gallon and 5 gallon vinyl paint strainer bags for adding flavors and macerating specialty gr...

Re: Element power question
from what i've read.. And I've researched this subject a lot on here and other sites yes you can run a 240 V element off of 120 just fine and yes it will give you approx about 1/4 the output wattage on that voltage so a 4500 Watt element will run at about 1125 or so. Just don't attempt to go the opp...

And from what i've read from others that have used marbles, you would need to fill the entire column to get any kind of efficiency and it would make that girl really top heavy (Like a brick housssse)

Re: Granulated Feed Molasses
The ingredients on the bag say 100% sugar cane, and there wasn't any warning on the bag that says (Not for human consumption) which is unusual for any type of feed store feed. At the very least I was thinking I could boil it up and let it macerate and then filter out the liquid to use for the flavor...

Granulated Feed Molasses
I have a bag of granulated feed molasses that I bought, its a 50Lb bag listed as sugar cane feed molasses. I read a few posts that list using feed molasses, and see Rum recipes calling for like a gallon of feed molasses for example, and I'm not sure how to measure this stuff out cause i'm pretty sur...

Re: Alembic Style Pot Still Head
I've already redesigned the lyne arm output in my head, I just have to hack it together, maybe sometime this next week, It will be a less drastic angle and slowly taper down from a 2" to about 1" (possible over 18" to 2 feet length) And it should fit in better to the classic design th...

Alembic Style Pot Still Head
Not too long ago I posted pics of my VM column still head. And I've finally got a little time together to throw together my Pot Still head I'm calling it an Alembic style because that is what it looks similar to. The pots were obtained from NRI Bazzar at a fairly reasonable cost, and the rest are ju...

Re: rivets
I have pondered taking #6 or #8 grounding wire and cutting it into little lugs about 1/4 inch long or so drilling similar size hole through material being connected and squeezing or tapping it together till both sides form a head. might not be as pretty as solid rivets that already come with a head ...

that particular "stub out" as we call it at Home depot in the center of my condenser is a Pex brand I used it because it already had the 90 degree turn and nipple on the end that made it useful for attaching to cooling water.

Finally! Completed first Still ever.
Hey guys, awhile back I posted some hand drawn plans for a VM still that I was planning on building. Working full time and going to college full time doesn't lend itself to much time out in the shop but after months and months of accumulating, planning, and learning, I finally threw something togeth...

I haven't even built my still to try this out on but I wanted to practice my soldering before I actually soldered my still to learn how to do it, so I figured this would be a good project.

Condenser Coil Ver. 2.0
Taking some suggestions and using some of my own ideas I threw together another condenser yesterday. It consists of a double coil and a cold finger. I used better thicker walled 1/4" copper this time (.030") and was able to do all my coils without any salt (Yay!) for the cold finger I used...

to Salt or not to Salt
I'm pretty sure this has been addressed before I've seen it mentioned in other posts but I just wanted to throw it in here for any newbies trying to wind coil. I've seen people including myself mentioned their frustration in trying to wind tight coils with 1/4 OD copper tubing. And finally resorting...

Re: Pre-Build Design Check
Quick question on condenser design, I'll probably build up something like the double helix and the cold finger like the one pictured above and this one: http://homedistiller.org/wiki/index.php/images/c/ce/19_RefluxCondenserCoil-1-.jpg However I noticed that both of them have a cap on the top. I have...

Re: Pre-Build Design Check
Took a chance and took My T back to the hardware store and was able to exchange it no big deal. Redrew up section with suggestions.
T- is now 2"x2"x1.5" added thermometer at outlet, reducer down to 3/4" into valve.

Also changing the T to 1" may be an issue, I already have my T that goes out to 3/4". and as you know they don't give those things away.

Re: Pre-Build Design Check
Moving the Thermo no big deal. I can shorten the condensor coil and lengthen the column, I haven't cut into my 2" copper yet so thats no big deal (48" piece) I had considered two coils originally using a cold finger in the center as a return to help flow but scrapped the idea because I tho...

to be technical the metal lug part (screw in part) of most of your water heater elements are not stainless either. (try sticking a magnet on one). I'm assuming these parts will always be submerged in your wash during use, there may be some acidic issues but the parts are not coming in contact with y...

Re: Packing...
The cost of the copper is probably more than the cost of the scrubbers, so not sure if this would be a cost effective alternative for anyone else. However, since I've been sitting on this stuff for years and don't see myself winding any electric motors or pretty much anything else i'd rather do this...

Thank you for the ideas and suggestions. After I get done with my build I'll use this one and see how well it works. Another Condenser Question: I have all the parts to make a killer Liebig Condenser that can come off of my 4 foot 2" column. Will this be an added bonus to my reflux still. or wo...
