Hey everyone I put this wash down 2 days ago today, it started fine it was 1.070 starting gravity and today it's only 1.060 now if I'm not wrong it's fermenting very slow ? So my question is what are some tips to keep it warm it's winter over here at the moment and it's gets about 15 over night than...

grain amounts for bourbon?
I have a question, im trying to make a bourbon, I am going make 25 litre wash, but im not sure how much of each grain is normally needed for a 25 litre wash? I was wondering if someone could give me some guide lines on that? thank you

is my wash infected?
i have a question im making a bourbon whiskey recipe atm, everything was fine i was away for 8 days and came back to it having white spots on the top i want to know what it is mould or what? i got told it could be the corn souring but im not sure and i cant upload a photo of it is either.

ok I think to get far in this hobby I need to know what dunder and backset are, as im not sure and I did a search and it can be 2 things and I don't know which one it is either the stuff left in the bottom of the fermenter or the leftover wash in the still? can someone clarify which one it is please?

thanks for your recipe , feed grade is that blackstrap or "fancy molasses" ? and if I don't have dunder do I just fill the rest with water?

oh thanks I didn't know that, also I don't know if I can get panela in Australia so I dunno but I know they use caramelised sugar to colour but im guessing this will also sweeten it up

thanks do you have a recipe anywhere on this site I could have a look at? or if I cant get fancy molasses, to make it the same sweetness with black strap molasses would I need to probably adjust the sugar further ?

so an update I have it in the still its heated up and starting dropping but I think theres a problem? its only dripping 3 drips maybe every 5 seconds and this is the first wash I have had in it that has done this so im comfused as to why ? anyone else had this problem? its not because its too thick ...

well its 30 degrees but will the bubbles completely stop before its done sorry its probably a basic question but I haven't done rum wash so im not 100 percent sure what to look for

no mate that's fine haha its ok I didn't filter it as I was thinking it would probs strip some flavour from it so now I have it on some whiskey chips to colour it and flavour it further so its already a light golden colour in 1 day of chipping so im hoping it colours up nicely intructions are 10 gra...

update on the rum wash, the sg is still 1.030, so that's 3 days with the same sg and its bubbling very slow now so I think tomorrow or later today even it might have finished fermenting

ok update i have collected 500 mls off the stills, and im happy to say from tasting i get the taste of sweet caramel i don't think that's what it is suppose to taste like haha but its very nice regardless and that's just dipping my finger in to taste i cant wait to try a shot worth to get the full f...

hey guys the rum wash is still bubbling very slightly like yesterday I measured the s.g just now at 2 and a half days its still 1.030 hasn't moved at all, same as yesterday hmmm I wonder if it will cease in 3 days as its been 2 and a half from start to finish.

yeah sorry silly me I ment 1.030 and well ihope it doesn't have a leak or crack because theres no bubbles in the airlock that's what made me think it wasn't really working then I took the lid off to have a look and it was and is bubbling but very slow like a can of coke or pepsi in a cup if you know...

doogie what your describing is exactly what my wash is doing now so not all hope is lost then, how long did yours take to fully ferment? and 3.5 percent possible alchohol what would that be in mls, if the wash volume is 20ls? thank you

to be honest its the beer and wine hydrometer I got from a hbs, but I can use it to read spirits apparently the lady recons 990 is the correct sg for finished spirit give or take on temp ofcourse, well anyway I cant read it properly but its on the 30 or the "start" for the beer reading if ...
