Re: Question for Antique Experts

Flake stand is an awesome idea, not only does it look neat but being copper it should radiate heat nicely and you could solder the spout into the side of it real cleanly, never have a bulkhead leak again

Re: PREPPING - Yes - No - Why !

Hmm. Only a few months of dust and there seems to be a little left, hell ill try a sip For some people "prepping" means spending money on things that make them feel secure, usually lots of money, for those same people a "hobby" is a when you buy something expensive to enjoy being...

Re: What am I smelling?

Stainless keg, copper condenser pot still, I doubt it's smearing because I run it so slowly, around 1L per hour or less, I could probably run faster but I'm gun-shy after experiencing a boilover one time. And like I said, it wasnt there anymore after base treatment Also, has anyone else tried this? ...

Re: Pineapples???m

I've fermented pineapples before, they have to be used sparingly, and the flavor didn't really present itself in the wine, so I don't think there would be much point in trying to distill pineapple wine, it seems like any good aromatics that were there got blown out the airlock, Now an idea that soun...

Re: What am I smelling?

Yeah added to low wines for spirit, I know not to add base to wash, cuz of ammonia and corrosion I've run spirits without soda and it hardly affected the must smaste (if anything it seemed to make it worse because whatever it was there was more of it present) My "wash" is really just the s...

What am I smelling?

Just tried adding baking soda to spirit run for first time, and wow major improvement, I've had this pervasive smell/taste (smaste?) Without the soda, it's hard to describe in a single word... Musty? Oilly? Vaguely reminiscent of the scotch I buy myself for Christmas (Laphroaig) but only the "r...

Hmm.... Never seen one of those notices nor been asked to disclose any of that info at the tractor, not 2 months ago when you I was buying feed molasses nor 2 years ago when buying a whole farm full of feed plus actual medicines, anthelmintics, vaccines injectable antibiotics, whole spiel, at differ...

Re: Theft of low wines

Maybe not, lol sometimes I forget I'm not a detective, im a worry wart by nature so I've already thought up a million and 1 ways I could be unlucky enough to get in trouble, and pre-emptively moved my whole operation to a reclusive spot in the woods near by friends house, nowhere near my house, and ...

Re: Theft of low wines

I think someone bringing their own container is far more likely than anything else suggested, now ask yourself "who or why would someone do that as opposed to grabbing collection pot?' Because whoever took it thought ahead, they anticipated the suspicion this would bring and didn't want to be c...

Re: Safe to shalack the crackly end of a coon pecker?

An observation, on a recent cleaning run on a newly build condenser I used a strip of paper towel twisted into a string to help direct my drips into the jar (it was disposed of cuz cleaning run but I didn't want flammible dribbles on the ground) and afterwords I realized that the alcohol wasn't runn...

Re: Buying used whisky barrels?

Saltbush, yeah I was thinking that, I plan to get a couple batches of beer out of the carboys and into boytles, then start filling the carboys with clear, and have around 15-20 gal before I pick up my barrel, then start running the still back to back instead of single runs, I'm thinking about using ...

Re: Buying used whisky barrels?

I've been distilling my homemade fruit wines that I prepare by the 50 gal barrel (I keep 2 or 3 in rotation) I find that my friends enjoy my wines best when fresh so I started distilling off the remainder of an old batch when the next one is ready, around 15-20gal of each barrel, every two weeks, wh...

Re: Buying used whisky barrels?

Not in a single run, or even a dozen, but over the course of a year, probably close, I'd rather spend $100 on a 53 gallon barrel and have all the likker storage I'd ever need (plus oak aging) than spend it on 3 glass carboys at the brewery shop, break one, and then be hurting for distillate safe sto...

Re: Buying used whisky barrels?

The website (if Im allowed to post) is sunshinebarrels.com the price listed for their used whiskey or wine barrels is $99 and they only have commercial sized used barrels (as they put it " once used and fresh dumped") I shouldn't have to pay for shipping at all, I'm close enough to drive t...

Buying used whisky barrels?

I like aging my spirits on wood and glass storage vessels are relatively expensive for moderately large quantities, so ive been thinking about buying a used whiskey barrel to store/age in, I don't make very much at once but I figure I could just add to the barrel from run to run, letting the average...

Re: MAP acceptable as nutrient?

That's a good question, I'll ask my buddy at the fire suppression company if he's got an MSDS for the fill Edit: after going through half a dozen MSDS the non MAP components are( is descending order of frequency) Ammonium sulphate (listed as a "yeast food" by my states anti distilling laws...

MAP acceptable as nutrient?

Is MAP (mono ammonium phosphate) an acceptable substitute for DAP yeast nutrient? If so then I have hundreds of pounds of yeast nutrient for free I didn't know about. (Buckets of MAP emptied out of scrap fire extinguishers) and I can stop paying $6 a pound at the brewshop Someone asked on stackexcha...

Erg, just lost a long reply I tapped out. Hate that, Not retyping it all, but long story short I'm familiar with metallurgical chemistry, and of all the compounds that could be produced by aluminum in an aqeuos environment at STP most are inert, many are used for intentional ingestion, and even if s...

Re: Aluminum oxy bottle as boiler?

Hello, Ive heard that about alum, but I think it's been debunked, the only issue with aluminum I've found is that under intense heating, (directly on propane burner for example) it pits, which for thin alum pots like the stockpot next to the tank in photo, leads to pinholes, but this tank is so thic...

Aluminum oxy bottle as boiler?

IMG_20200927_173229_resize_7.jpg After a 6 year hiatus from making alcohol I'm trying to assemble another still, and this time I don't have a keg sitting around (I did a couple months ago, but someone :problem: took it back to the liquor store for me), this is a convenience driven project so I'm go...

how to get rid of "nutty" flavour from nuetral spirits

hello all, I produced a birdwatchers recipe that I think came through pretty well, came out around 160 proof, ran it though my pot still 3 times, but everyone whose tried it says that it has a nutty flavor like crushed almonds, ive examined my recipe and I think I know how to get rid of it, but I th...

Re: Recipe for apples?

bcboyz86 mentioned on the first page boiling apple to make cider. just for the record don't do it! heat causes the pectins to set and will never clear so for the rest of the life of the cider it will look like mother of vinegar. no heat to the juice. if you make cider use Camden tabs to sterilize ju...
