Re: Searching for advice or potential problems in future with design

Shady is right Steam would not have a storage tank. I would recommend a mixer on any jacketed tank. My steam gauges stay at 0 for the majority of the run and then will max out at about 3 to 4 psi at the very end of the run when I am at tails. The mixer helps tremendously with heat exchange between t...

Re: Searching for advice or potential problems in future with design

Ok I will follow up. Some years ago I was going to build a still with a heating coil in the tank powered by hot heat transfer fluid. I gave up on the idea because even though I have been building boiler systems my whole life this one scared me. The mechanics are feasible but should there become a pr...

Re: Pumped Reflux Side Column CM Still

Hi again WC :D I've been trying to understand your process and have a lot more questions if you don't mind? OK, I started with CM but after much work could not get it to be repeatable with my then sized (1") column. I then got pretty good with LM and micro needle valves. I'm now at my most rep...

It’s dihydrogen monoxide. It is what forms the azeotropic solution. Not dangerous, however.

Re: Volt amp meters

I used this meter in my most recent build of my pumped reflux side column still. I have three elements in my boiler. I mostly just have it set to amps, one line of the gauge for each element. But you can read volts, amps watts etc https://www.automation24.com/digital-multifunction-meter-selec-mfm384...

Re: Pumped Reflux Side Column CM Still

Hi WC :D I have a technical question. Going back to your post of 09/28/22 and comparing it to this post above, is it possible you already reached maximum achievable results with your original column? https://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7725621#p7725621 Hey bunny I would disagree that th...

Re: Pumped Reflux Side Column CM Still

Ok it’s been awhile as I have not done much distilling this summer. It has been a busy summer and a hot one, didn’t need to add a bunch of extra heat to the house. So sorry for the delay but here it is. I did my cleaning runs shortly after finishing the build and spent some time learning how it want...

Re: refurbishing a second hand distillation column

I agree that you would be better off moving the outlet if you are using flame. please do not use any silicone tubing or any other synthetic other than PTFE. You could connect onto the condenser tubing using a 5/8" x 5/8" stainless compression coupling. https://www.amazon.com/Metalwork-Stai...

Sounds like I have to replace it. It took me many tries to get decent at soldering so I’m really nervous about tearing it apart and doing damage to adjacent joints, but it sounds like that’s the only option. Thanks so much to everyone for their help. If you are worried about melting other nearby jo...

That stinks that that is what they sent you.
I would replace it with a Nibco or Mueller brand.
That union is definitely not the one in the picture advertised.

It definitely looks like something is mismatched with that union.
The threads on the male part should be a larger diameter so to accept the other half into it.
Did you buy that from home depot or a chinese knockoff??

Re: ceramic rings meant for using in an aquarium

Its just that I dont have time or motivation to crush lava rocks to specific size 12-24 hours. Here the price of lava rocks and 2 packs of ceramic rings/balls equals. So why not test first with them? Did you stick same manufacturer rings or did you test others too? 12:to 13mm work well For what?? T...

Re: ceramic rings meant for using in an aquarium

In all my testing, ceramic rings are absolute shit. Don't waste your money. They produce lower % ABV and cause the column to flood. Copper mesh and scrubbers work better. Lava Rock works MUCH better than copper mesh and far better than scrubbers. Lava Rock is also less expensive. Its just that I do...

I would really recommend some high temp enzymes, otherwise you are going to end up with a pretty thick porridge.
I also would recommend 2.5 pounds per gal maximum.
