Re: First EC-1118 attempt...fail?
Hey guys, I am pretty new to distilling, I have done 7 or 8 successful sugar/turbo runs. I decided to get away from turbo yeast and got some EC-1118 and nutrients. I made 16lbs of sugar up to a 6.5 gallon wash, added 6 teaspoons of nutrients, made sure the wash was cooled enough and added two packs...

Re: What still to built or buy?
OK, I am now confused. I built a liebig almost identical with the one hookline built with the 1/2" inside and the 3/4" outside with the wire soldered to the inside pipe and wrapped around the tube. I also built a double condenser coil. I plan to build a VM still with a keg as my boiler an...

Re: Thumper?
A thumper is just a secondary boiler powered by the primary boiler. I know folks use glass thumpers, but I doubt it's smart. I mean think about it... a glass boiler? It's not even rolled borosilicate glass. Mason jars are cheap glass made in a mold. Do whatever yall think best, this is just my two-...

Add water.I use distilled water myself. If it's 80% and you add the same amount of water it will be 80 proof.

Stainless steel, I was surprised at just how thick the copper is in the bottom of the pan. There was a very thin layer of stainless on the inside, it is mostly copper.

When I made my boka I used a copper clad sauce pan and silver soldered the column right to the pan and made some clamps to attach the pan to the keg. I'll try to post some pics.

I wrapped the top 16" of the outside of my column with 1/4" tube and ran the output water from my double helix coldfinger through it, seems to work pretty good for me. This pic is early in the project before the coldfinger. The hose clamps and wood is research and development.

Because the government says I can't and I'm sort of a rebel.
Because my granddad spent 2 years in prison in the 30s for bootlegging
Because it's fun
Because I don't like paying taxes on booze.

Re: Distilling question
Sorry about that, the temp. got to 225 in the keg not 125. What I have is a stainless steel 15 gal. beer keg for the kettle and built the reflux column according to the one in the Blume book. The recipe I used came from an online and was for 100 gal. of water. We wanted to go small just to see if w...

Re: sugar weight
Actually, accurately reading your hydrometer will tell you the weight loss. If you start a 5 gallon batch at 1.080 it would weigh in at 1.080x 8.34x5=45lbs. If it finishes at .990 it would weigh .990x8.34x5=41.28 so the loss in weight of a typical ferment (not including grains/just liquid) would be...

Re: Good size/volume for beginner pot still
I think Prairie hit it on the nose. 15.5 keg.. You can run 10-12 gal runs or 5 gal runs. You can't run 10 gal runs in a 5 gallon keg unless you are on Moonshiners, then you get 20 gallons out of it. 15 gal keg is the ticket. I got another this morning off of craigslist for $25 Are you implying that...
