Re: what to do with a keg
ok so I got this thing off and I was curious and thought I would clear some things up for people, this is NOT a gps tracker, that would require a power supply for one, it is an RFID tag for asset management. they can not track you to your house because this works at very low range, thing of the alar...

I think it might be an RFID tag for asset tracking, only works at close range e.g within about 20cm

Re: what to do with a keg
Believe that is a gps locator. Was your keg legally acquired? yeah it was, it was originally bought from a cash and carry by a working mens social club, I then bought it off them for a donation to the club. As it wasn't purchased from a brewery I'm not sure why it would have a gps, I will use a mir...

Re: what to do with a keg
Take out the spear and use it as a fermenter. Cleaning really isn't the issue some make it out to be. Oxyclean is a wonderful thing. I have a couple that I cut the top off to use as fermenters, regret that move now. Should have left them unmolested. if you hadn't cut the top off you could have repu...

what to do with a keg
I am picking up a keg later someone got for me, i'm not 100% sure if it is stainless steel or not.
I Already have one as a boiler for my still so my question is what should I do with the other keg?
I was thinking of cutting the top off and using it to cook mash in, any other suggestions

Re: Something Wrong, Grains in or out (tennessee whiskey)
ok so i'm not too far off, I havn't added the yeast yet so I will leave it overnight and see if the SG goes up, I have no way of checking for remaining starches unfortunatly So i will just have to wait and see. either way I will pitch the yeast tomorrow

Re: Something Wrong, Grains in or out (tennessee whiskey)
another point is it gives newbies a bench mark to improve on, the only reference point a newbie has is what you can buy, until you have made some stuff yourself that is better, as a newbie you are in the dark and dont know any different.

Re: Something Wrong, Grains in or out (tennessee whiskey)
Ok i have just finished cooking the first batch and with the longer cook time its noticeably thicker, which is the starches i know that ;-), I was surprised how quick the enzymes in the barley malt work, I added them gradually and as I was stirring it was getting thinner and less mash like. awesome....

Re: Something Wrong, Grains in or out (tennessee whiskey)
ok this is cool thanks for the replies. so it looks like my main mistake was to not hold it at the top temp for long enough, basically I was following what I saw on a video from the jack daniels distillery, they didn't mention holding the temp there. I will try it again today. by the way my starting...

Re: Bombay Sapphire Gin
OK the reason the gin goes cloudy is that in the ABV you have not all the oils remain dissolved and those that are no longer dissolved become an emulsion with the water. The solution is to run your still in such a way that your output is at the ABV you want to bottle your product. When you do this ...

Re: Bombay Sapphire Gin
With water and spirits the same temperature you should be able to slowly add spirits to the water, allowing it to gradually become miscible, the chance of clouding is greatly minimized... However, if there are excessive heads or tails in the mix all bets are off... maybe that's the cause too much h...

Re: Bombay Sapphire Gin
it seems to happen with a low amount of water as well, I added 100ml water to 650ml of spirit and it still went cloudy.
I will try it the other way around but that doesn't make sense, in fact I will try it now

Re: Mash Rookies Daughter's Spiced rum
I am glad you made something you enjoy. Thats the fun of any recipe. Small changes that make it special to your tastes. Note that she uses "pure vanilla extract". The vanilla bean is great but may not be as concentrated. Imatation vanilla does not work. I wonder if vanilla flavor can boil...
