Re: Ethanol. What is the ratio; sugar-yeast -water?

I would say: take some sugar, a few times that amount of water and only a bit of yeast.

But then eternal already beat me to it. So take his advice, and take it good. 8)

Didn't know the New Zealanders even ate pies. There ya go, ain't nuthin they won't pinch from the Auzzies. I thought pies were Dutch? :| Sorry BW, but the kind of pies you're talking about (filled with meat of some kind and eaten for a meal) we are not accostumed to in the Netherlands. I believe th...

Re: Where'd your name come from??

When driving on the Autobahn (freeway) i always tend to drive on the left (fast) lane for most of the time.

It also has a deeper meaning: In my opinions i'm mostly different than other people. I'm kinda 'driving on the "wrong" side of the road', so to say..

Prices over here are ranging from eur. 1,43 to 1,55 per litre. At the going rate that would be about $ 8.50 for a gallon.

No coincedence that my distilling has increased over the last couple weeks..

Over here i can buy it in every liquerstore. (if i would go to such a place, ofcourse ;) ) A bottle costs about 15 euros.

Best way to go is to make sure there is not a lot to clean afterwards when you build a still. In other words: work clean and tidy. Not too much solder and / or flux on the joints. And clean each part while you can still can reach it after building it, because a lot of parts will be unaccessable when...

You say you collected about a gallon over a timespan of a bit more than 8 hours.. That's 4 liters in 8 hrs, is about 500 mls/hr. That doesn't sound very bad. Keep in mind that quality takes time. I take my good stuff at abut the same rate. You can go faster, but you'll find that back in the quality....

Tip for a 'boil-breaker' that doesn't rattle:

In thin mashes i use one or more (depends which still i'm using) scrubbers to break the boil. Yup, the same as which my column is packed with. They have lots of surface-area to break the boil, but weigh almost nothing, so no noise.

Hi Riff, UR asked if the starches did convert to sugars, if not there won't be anything to ferment in the first place. Starch conversion is something else than just cooking the grains to make a porridge. It's about taking the enzymes to a temperature at which they work the best (around 63 - 65 degre...

- prefab pipeinsulation (the kind plumbers use..)

just a few suggestions. I'm sure you can think of a lot more.

I saw 94 % sulphuric acid on sale at a DIY department of a hardware store. It was sold to dissolve sewage from clogged-up drainpipes.

Didn't buy it then [was gonna try it for mentioned reasons ;)] because i thought it ws quite expensive.
8,something euro's for half a litre (500ml.)

I've had pumps burning out on me. Those weren't meant for continous use, apparantly.. But having read the above posts, i think i might add some thoughts: 1. After the cooling water has been pumped up to the condenser the siphoning action of the water returning to the barrel will help 'pulling' the w...

Macerating is to steep things (fruits or herbs) in a liquid (water, alcohol) to extract the flavours. Like brewing a cup of tea. If you can insulate the fermenter you should be fine already. (depends on insulation and how cold it actually gets) Because fermentation causes heat.
So if can insulate the fermenter the wash can keep itself warm enough to carry on.

15 gallons.. that would be about 60 ltrs.

let me think..
60 ltrs @ 8 % abv (average grain mash..) make 4.8 ltr @ 100%
dilluted to 40 % abv would be... a lot of booze..

ehm.. i've got spare bottles...

Like the dawg said: just a method to let the CO2 out.
Besides that it keeps the yeast in suspension, that just might get the fermentation reach it's end a little faster.
Could be used as an indicatoer also: if it doesn't bubble when you shake it the fermentation is done..

Guys, lots of discussion on this topic. And luckily most of it makes good sense :D But my vote goes to oil in the double boiler. Vegetable oil (like for deep frying) boils at 180 degrees. The narrower pipe would be cooled down faster, but going from a 42 mm column to 22 mm condenser might, just might, cause somme channeling effect: Vapours pushed up the condenser with quite some speed. And they're more difficult to condense. But since you're using a barrel there would be enough lengt...
