Re: Calling all Alberta hobby distillers

Boy have I been away for a while...... No new developments, haven't had much time to direct to the cause lately. Though I've been itching to stir the pot again. I've relocated to Saskatchewan back in November and haven't even unpacked my still yet. But soon very soon lol. Seems Saskatchewan is a lit...

As most of you know I had finally attempted some all grain runs. Your making the same mistake as many rookies. I gather from your post your running a pot still. You don't run a pot still by temps. You just get to a Broken stream, then adjust your heat to maintain it. Alcohol has a boiling point, water has a boiling point, alcohol mixed with water has a boiling po...

In light of this topic: http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=56476 I got to thinking. Perhaps some of the masters could do up some short "How To" videos on proper techniques. I know everything is google able but sometimes it can be hard to find a video that relates to wh...

Re: Still blew a weld.

Thinking about it. Yeah. The way the joint was made is definately a factor. If I relate it to soldering a pipe with water in it, the solder around the edge of the fitting will melt, but the solder actually in the joint won't because the water prevents it from heating up enough. Same principle here, ...

Also, managed to rummage around in his wood shed a bit, and found in amongst all the red oak his neighbour gave him from cabinet scraps, a nice 8"x38"x3/4" slab of white oak. So, question is, which is more preffered? Sticks or cubes?

That looks like there was no overlap. Looks like a butt connection to me also. There needs to be some overlapping lip for proper strength. I see this type of connection fail quite often even on stainless tanks that have been TIG welded. The minor flexing that takes place while filling and emptying ...

Re: Activated carbon filters for Distilled alcoholic beverag

For what it's worth... I agree that a properly fermented mash/wash wouldn't need to SIT on carbon. HOWEVER I usually pass my final spirits through a carbon filter not so much for the taste, but to remove any unseens that might precipitate out later, I.e. Microscopic cinnamon particles and such from ...

Re: ridges on the inside of couplings

On reducers and tees and such, I've gone as far as straight up cutting the branch off, and then brazing my pipe right to it. Such was the case with my first Liebig. I needed a 3/4" tee but all I had was a 3/4x1/2x3/4. Cut the 1/2" branch off pushed my 3/4" inner pipe through, and braz...

Re: corrugated ss - yes or no ?

Some Lowe's and Home Depot stores also carry rolls of CSST gas line for housing use. It is very popular here on the east coast. Most all plumbing supply houses carry it too. The rolls you get are thinner metal than the appliance gas connectors. This allows for good heat transfer also. The drawback ...

I too dread the dentist. I've had THOUSANDS of work done on my mouth. I don't see why you are making provisions for a law that doesn't apply. One thing I don't think most have touched on, you said you want to build a still from a water heater? If your talking about a typical water heater, then you may want to take a step back and start reading the novice area. Water heaters (except for very expensive ones) are made of steel. Some are glas...
