Re: Pot Still Collection Rate
For a spirit run of 30% ABV on a 2” column pot with a 2200W electric boiler, I set the power to where I am just getting the unfaltering pencil-lead stream. If I backed the power off even slightly I’d be back to getting drips. I collect great product this way at about 1.5 litres per hour This is exa...

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
Hello everyone. I'm on my 5th or 6th gen now and no problems so far. Great recipe thxs for all the good information. Just one thing tho on my 1st gen it fermented down to .990 and now everyone since stops at 1.000 so there not stalling. But I did try something on the last one. I made up the sour ma...

Re: 180l UJSSM
This is ballpark but for a pot still you will have about a 1/3 hearts. Of course there are many variables that can change this.
A column of any sort will drastically increase your hearts yield as it compresses the heads fraction but this also results in a different type of spirit.

Really hard to say as there isn’t enough information. Recipe used, ABV of aging spirit, how it was blended, water used for dilution etc etc etc?

Re: Straightening boiler port
The top center of a keg has different thicknesses, when I welded my 4” ferrule to the top leveling it and getting a good weld was a Pita. If it’s not far off you might try leveling the column by wedges under the keg to get the column vertical. That’s my plan. The original port was that way so I hav...

Re: First Whiskey run
Hello there. First off you have some reading to do. All your questions are pretty basic stuff which there is a section here that will answer all of it. But with that said you should try to focus on one part at a time. 1. All depends on how fast you run your still. 2. You need to add water to keep yo...

I’ll report back with more details on it. I left it at my garage which is down the road and haven’t looked at it that close yet. I just know it’s not straight.

Alright guys now I have a lot of experience working with steel but not that much stainless. I just had a new 3” long ferrule welded in the top of my keg to replace the original 2” sankey. Well from the heat applied the new ferrule is anything but level so when I attack my column it’s going to look a...

Re: Plan for 18yo whiskey
You don't have to put the whiskey in a barrel, you can put the barrel in the whiskey. There is plenty of discussion on this topic to be found on the site. Barrel staves come up for sale now and again, but I prefer toasting and charring dominoes cut from a weathered oak round I got from my firewood ...

Congrats on the little one! Here’s to a healthy Momma and Baby during the whole pregnancy! I agree on the fact that you would want to pull the spirit from the cask when it reaches your liking and then seal it in glass. I think your plan is a cool idea and hope your little one can appreciate it when ...

Hello and welcome!
Yes with a 7l still you going to need to go very slow 1-2 drips per second. Even a full charge of 40% low wines isn’t going to result in a whole lot of usable product. But with that said if you take your time and exercise patients you will do just fine.

Spirit run watching the funeral :( I'll be making cuts and filling the barrel on Friday. I was thinking that since this is going into a barrel that I should absolutely go into the tails, and maybe add some late heads? I would definitely say go deep into the tails and taste test the jars. As for hea...

Do we have anyone here that’s from Alaska that was affected by the recent earthquake? Or any family members and friends? Hoping everyone is ok! Knowing how Alaska can be and having some friends and family of my own that are way north of the affected area it can take a lot of time to hear from them.

The turbo yeast idea, well yeah it’s a bad one hahaha.
I’d be interested in seeing some pictures of your setup and hearing about your process. Everyone has their “things” they do differently which makes this hobby interesting.

So most of the CCVM builds I notice people have a made a stainless gas line coil. I’m using a 2”x8” double wound copper coil.
When you are in full reflux mode how far is the bottom of your coil below the take off port?
