Re: Chinese double-wall still, ordering and setup

What did you end up doing for gaskets? Did you order a flat sheet? I need some flat ptfe gaskets to replace the silicone in my sight glasses I got those teflon ones mentioned up-thread that have flexible viton cores or something. I never did order flat sheet and cut them out. It does work, but also...

Re: Chinese double-wall still, ordering and setup

These responses brought back all of these memories of getting this thing dumped on the driveway. It's still working well, but honestly makes more product than I can deal with. I sure do like the double-wall nature of it, though. Been talking to a local guy here lately who is thinking of getting one....

Re: packing copper mesh into column

For what it's worth, I ended up getting really large stainless scrubbies and packing them into the column on top of the rolls of copper mesh. They seem to clean up easier and are easier to pack and deal with. I put one plate in the bottom of the column to make sure they all stay in.

Re: Odin's Easy Gin

I've made a bunch of batches of OEG by now thanks to this thread and the mellowing time holds true. What it tastes like on day 1 is not what it tastes like in a couple of months. I don't remember if I posted this before on this thread, but one thing I really enjoy doing is adding some blue color fro...

Best wishes for you cob and WhiskeyRebellion. Hope you get the good news that there's nothing to worry about, cob. WR, colonoscopy is no big deal once you're there, but it will be great to know. Ideally figue out what your water needs to avoid the Ph crash next time. more often ph crashes the least happy your yeast will be and % keeps will suffer as a result when you do your cuts. Sounds like your lacking calcium in your water so you need more oyster shells to help buffer things as the yea...

for what it's worth, I use those enzymes and add the alpha to my finely ground corn on the way up to boil. I let it bubble for 30 min or so while stirring, and it stays thin the whole time. It never thickens up. Boiling temp might break down some of them, but enough remains to do the job. I'm on a d...

Not the best time to be heading to the hospital. More likely to catch the plague there than most other places. Liquid diet is not great, but I'm glad they got you fixed up in time to go home Christmas Eve.

Re: My agave spirit

Got mine in a barrel that is on its fourth use to mellow. I think it's pretty great after 45 days already. Harsh flavors seem to have gone away pretty quickly. Next time I may keep more of the heads and tails if I'm intending to put it in the barrel.

Those parts work well. You'll get a working controller with them. I use a different one now, but I built this one, and it still works great. It's possible to go fancier or to get a kit for less than $60 from one distilling company online that uses a variable Solid State Relay and a potentiometer ins...

Re: Rye whiskey mash question

It turned out ok. I had it in a once used 3 gallon Gibbs Bros barrel that had HBB in it for 4 months for the first run through. I left it in that barrel for a year with one extra stick of charred white oak that I stuck in there through the bung hole and then pulled it out when it started tasting too...

Re: My agave spirit

I ran it again with some scrubbies and a smidge of reflux to see if it would clean up and get nicer in flavor. The reflux condenser water was coming out hot at 72F with a really slight trickle of water through it, so there was some, but not much. I think it's pretty great right now. It's a different...

Re: My agave spirit

I did my spirit run into jars today. I had about 10 gallons at 20%. I put 50ml of terpenes in it to see what would come out because I liked the taste of the terpenes that I tried a bit of. Um, it is flavorful! Honestly I may run it again diluted back to 20% or so. I have it in jars with coffee filte...

Right. But if not adding heat it would keep going down. 8) The strip is happening now. I added another 100ml of terpenes. It started coming out at 45 percent and is really floral and nice. Very pleasant. I am collecting in the same stainless vessel to combine with my previous strip I've been hanging...

Re: My agave spirit

I screwed up today. Turned on heater and meant to heat for 10 min to get it from 87 back to 90 but forgot to set a timer so it was 160 before I realized it.

I'm just going to run it to see what I get. I could cool it and repitch yeast, but it will already be weird..

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll give 1 tbsp of the lime a try tomorrow to see how that goes. The ferment at 90F has been going gangbusters so far. After 24 hours it had dropped from 5 to 3.6. I adjusted it up to 5 again with calcium carbonate. It did not stay up from just the oyster shells. I'll check it again tomorrow. Second ferment was 1.034 to start. I made a yeast bomb for this one by boiling 3/4 cup of yeast instead of adding feemax as if I was doing a regular sugar wash. Wanted to make it easy to ferment. The pH was 7.0 after dilution before adding any acid. I didn't use any backset from the last batch. Two ...

8Ball, After I dumped the dunder from my distillation I noticed that the full cup of crushed oyster shells I had put in as a buffer had been dissolved. Was anyone’s ferment kind of, well, enteric smelling?

One day in it is bubbling well, but stinky and unpleasant unlike the yeasty smells I normally get from sugar or grain ferments.

Nice. Glad I hit the right neighborhood.
