Re: propanol 2 in the tails

Agreed, my comment upon seeing the results was that I was including perhaps too much late heads in the final cut and perhaps I should wait another jar. If you look at the Acetylaldehyde in the hearts column, it is much lower than what would up in the final mix. I am by no means claiming experience o...

Re: propanol 2 in the tails

Mg/l=ppm. Not sure what type of liquor photonics was testing, have to go back and look at that. If it was neutral vs. Whisky that would certainly account for higher acetalaldehyde.

Still learning what all the numbers mean..

Seriously? No one is going to call this guy on this? After all the dissing of turbo yeasts (rightly so) when used for distilling, this guy comes along and wants TO DRINK HIS WASH! All the talk of methanol and fusel oils and heads and hangovers and no one thinks this is a bad idea? It probably wont k...

Spot on E.F. My column is insulated, the horizontal is as well, but I stopped it at the 90. shor nuff, the vertical and reducer are hot to the touch. Thanks for the thermodynamics lesson. I never intended to learn about vapor flow, physics and thermodynamics and such with this hobby, but it is a ple...

Ive got an important addition to this discussion, Regarding placement of valve, horizontal or vertical. I didnt think there was any difference, hadn't read anything that convinced me one way or the other, TILL TONIGHT! My valve is on the vertical side, after the 90 bend. Learning the hard way, I had...

Gin Basket

Ok, not to get all drmiller100 on y'all, but in my musings, I was thinking about gin, and gin baskets, and where I would put it in my VM column. I read where someone put a satchel of botanicals in the column, just under the T. my thoughts is that may reflux a lot of the flavor out? What about after ...

Thanks for the numbers Husker, gives me an idea of how to run it, just more appropriately sized. And all this cause some guy had cheap 55 gal drums for sale on Craigslist! I like the idea of rotating out into carboys, its a lot of transfering etc, but keeps everything going. Id need to get a few mor...

UJSM in 55 gal fermenter?

I have a 15.5 gal keg boiler, and thinking of getting a 55 gal fermenter to cut down on waiting time. Also about time to try a UJSM run. I understand the principal of adding the backset and more sugar to keep fermentation going, but can you do this in a 55 gal fermenter? I can only pull out 12-13 ga...

Re: Offset-Head still design - opinions please

I've found the fill port on my boiler to be indespensible. Combined with a drain valve at the bottom. I break down every run ATM but if you are in a spot to be able to leave your rig set up you will appreciate it. Especially if you have easy access to welding/welders. My $.02

Re: Coolant flow rate for VM?

Yes Hook, single coil. I got off on the idea of a coldfinger being enough on its own, so I built a single coldfinger of 1" pipe and a capped reducer on the end to center the drips. 9" overall. Minime scared me into thinking that wouldnt be enough so I wrapped a coil around the whole thing....

Re: Coolant flow rate for VM?

Well, the bigger hammer method helped at least, got another pump rated @ 535gal/hr @ 1' and plugged it in. Got the whole system up to 30 gal/hr which at least by looking at it seems like it should work. at least its enough to attach the damn column to the boiled and run the water test. Yeah mini, I ...

Coolant flow rate for VM?

I just picked up a pond pump for my column, and the flow rates were somewhat less than advertised. When running through my rig I am getting a liter in about a minute and a half, translates to roughly 7 gal/hr. Seems just a trickle, is that enough for a 2"x 48" column? Also thinking ...

Re: thumper with strip run?

That does make sense. More and more as I look at the new build, it will be easier to just ditch the idea of the thumper altogether and go with the strip/spirit method. I loved the idea of getting an 'extra' distillation without much more effort, but it just might not be worth it.... I've been making...
