Re: Snuffy Smith has died.
Ya'll were arguing over a reality show? Straight up? Very little on television is reality. Reality sucks to watch. (America's Funniest Home Videos being the exception.) Even naked people running around some jungle, beach or rainforrest. Even if they made one about the top female porn stars would be ...

Re: First no yeast (added) run.
Just ran it this afternoon. It worked for about a week then sat for a couple of days. Couldn't run it yet. I poured about 1 1/2 gals in the still and a qt in the thumper. Worked off really quickly. Got about 60 mls of lighter fluid, added it to the rest I've been saving. Pulled off a pint of stuff w...

Re: Semi successful???
First time I ran a thumper I filled it up too much. First stuff came out crystal clear then came out cloudy. My thumper filled up and pushed the mash into the worm. It was still hi proof so I threw it in with the next run with no harm. I fill my thumper a third full and haven't had the same issue ag...

Re: First no yeast (added) run.
The main reason to go this route is because my inspiration came from watching "The Last Run". Since then I've wanted to make a "run" like it was done in the woods. Water, corn, sugar and malt. Call me a romantic, a lunatic or just plain nuts, but it peaks my curiosity. It's also ...

Re: Advice on why this is not working at all?
Oh how I remember those anxious hours when I first began learning to distill. I went through the same anxiety. Why the heck am I not getting any thing? I don't get any thing below 195. People are correct. Pot stills don't care about a thermometer. I do just like they say. I put the spurs to the pot ...

Re: First no yeast (added) run.
I used feed corn. I soaked it to try something different. Maybe get things moving faster or more complete. The corn did not sprout. The corn was kept whole. This recipe is a simple one I had gleaned from doing so much reading. I wanted to do a run without any added yeast, fancy additives or mail orde...

I'm not advocating using glass. So don't blow me up. Thermal shock is the down fall of the med student's case. Why he was spraying water on the tubing I have no idea. If you take a hot glass casserole, which is made for high temps, and put it in cold water it will crack.

Re: first run
My second run was a corn syrup wash. It had some alcohol in it, but not very good. Read up on some of the recipes and give one a shot. Or should I say a couple or three shots. It takes a lot to produce some good stuff. The old timers make it look easy because they have gone through a lot to get ther...

First no yeast (added) run.
3 lbs dry corn (yellow), soaked for 3 days, changed water each day. Starting on Sunday. Drained water from corn and added it to 1 gallon well water in a pot on the stove on Wednesday. Simmered for 90 minutes. Strained out the corn and added it to 1 gallon of backset. Dissolved 1 lb of white sugar an...

Re: Ready for liftoff
I'm a beginner as well. I have just a few runs under my belt. I run as simple a set up as you can. I have a 3gal SS pot for a boiler. 3/8 in copper line to the thumper. More copper line from the thumper to the worm barrel. That's it. I run small batches. My last batch of two gals I collected 3 pints...

No, glass isn't a good idea. I'll cutt my chances, third times the charm right, and retire it. I'm not about causing a stir. I just used what I had on hand. It worked like champ both times. No excuse for using it other than novice enthusiasm.

I get blue when I clean my still by running vinegar and then water. It takes more time, but corrosion builds up inside copper and you have to clean it out first.

Re: glass thumper on parent site
Using the right kind of glass matters. There are glass teapots, glass distillers, glass ovenware, hi temp glass insulators, the glass mason canning jars we use to collect our recipe in, etc. Also checking it for defects is important. It's one of the first steps when prepping the canning jars. Look f...

Re: Shine that "melts" in your mouth?
With a system that goes from hot to cold breakage can occur. Scratches, cracks, etc, can also cause breakage. I guess I didn't see a problem cause I've also done pressure canning at temps well above what I run my pot still at. I can, in glass jars, at over 212 under 15lbs of pressure. My pot still n...

Yeah, I'm the farmer type or should I say gardener type. Plus I like recipes that say, "combine ingredients. Set side for a week. Then......" I am also trying my hand at malting. Another not so simple task. That being said, if all is the same then until next year I'll stick with yellow. Ma...

Re: Shine that "melts" in your mouth?
Yes, I use a glass thumper. It's just a pickle jar with two holes cut in the lid and towels wrapped around it to keep the heat in and make it work better. I charged it with the runs I previously made. I read this on the parent website as I read alot of information on this subject. I also watch a lot...

White Corn
Has anyone tried/used white corn for making their recipe? I read that that is where the nickname "white lightining" came from. I know corn comes in a variety of colors, but the distillation process will strip out the color. The only corn I have found for sale, at tractor supply, is yellow ...

Re: Shine that "melts" in your mouth?
Using a SS pot, two pieces of copper, a 1/2 gal glass pickle jar as a thumper and a cat litter bucket as a water cooler. The wash is a second run of corn, sugar and raisin mash. I've gotten rot gut bathtub type crap before. My last run was decent, but this one caught me by surprise. I'm just tasting...

Shine that "melts" in your mouth?
I made my first run with a thumper. The shine burns true blue in the spoon, no yellow at all. Smells like a caramel vodka I had once. The weird thing is I fill a teaspoon to taste it, slurp it in with some air and it melts away. Spoon's empty, no liquid in my mouth and I can feel the heat, but its n...

What are you looking for in taste?
What exactly are you looking for, taste wise, in a good corn moonshine? Are there any good ones on the shelf? I don't want a drink that burns so bad there is no tasting it. I like the idea of making a really good corn whiskey. After a few decades I'd like to be able to make a smooth, easy flowing, g...

cooling water to the still. is there a temperture spread or is there an ideal temperture? Several lines of thinking on this... First is the fact that you never want to shock cool the distillate vapor back into liquid... This can impart unwanted flavors that may not result from more gradual condensa...

You never forget your first time.
I have been intereted in makin' a shine run for a while. Ever since I first watched, "The Last Run." I was in a hardware store, a few months ago, standing in front of a roll of 3/8 copper tubing and the next thing I know I was headin' out the door with it. (After having paid for it of cour...
