Re: Design Question

I made mine modular so I can use the same condensor, it's built in a cap. Condensor pops off the boka head, then drops into the new configuration. I snap a 90 and a tee on the column with triclamps, condensor on top of the tee, output on the bottom. I'm actually kinda sneaky proud of it, it's my own...

Don't leave your still. Even if you have a thermometer on your phone. It's not safe, and you don't get the same experience as if you sit by it and listen to what it's saying to you.

Re: Dumb Newbie Bokakob Question

After trying everything else, I heated my three inch and used a big fucking hammer. Piece of wood to avoid dents. Worked, and it's tight, but I can't guarantee that it will work as well for you. Seriously, I tried everything else first. Even rented a pipe expander.

Lost near a gallon of neutral once, in the kitchen. That jug was just sitting there. Nobody touched it, and it wasn't warm, it was sitting for weeks after I made it. Don't reuse gallo wine jugs. They are not to be trusted.

I don't use the carbon anymore, but if anyone did come here for actual information about it, here's my advice. Don't use pvc. Use pharmaceutical grade carbon. Rinse it! You can never fully filter out the dust. If you didn't rinse it, forget coffee filters etc, just run it again. It was a useful crut...

I run a 35 gallon trash barrel with a recirculation pump. When it gets warm, I drop the out hose into a 5 gallon bucket and use another one to add cool water. Repeat as needed.

EPDM gaskets are crap, and the Teflon ones cost pennies more each.
If you're buying the prefab ones for triclamp junctions. Teflon ones last virtually forever too.
A bicycle inner tube contacting your hot likker could kill you.
It'll at least make you real sick.
Cheers!

Re: Temp Control - you're doing it wrong.

Okay, so does a gas or Electric hotplate usually have steady heat output controls? you need adjustable controlls. I use a variac with the electric heat elements. a router controll is good also. If you have a hot plate it should be modified to stay on full to allow the variac/router controll to adju...

Re: Lets Talk Column Packing

I use that red stuff, never clean it, after three runs I dump it in the planter. It's dirt cheap. Between runs I rinse it off in the column with the hose. I get better results hand picking the bag then hand packing it, trying to fit it together like tetris or something. A big bag that will pack my c...

I ran an offset nixon stone for my first rig, I still think you should give lava rocks a go. Running in 100% reflux is definitely a plus initially, after warmup before you start takeoff... let the vapor stack, like a parfait.... takeoff should be slow enough to keep the layers stable. mash rookies t...

Or else add column length, as was previously suggested, from the bottom.
If it's triclamp to the keg you can buy a foot of preflared ss, teflon gaskets, clamp it in.

I sample mine diluted with distilled water during the run, eyeball it to around 45%.
It seems to amplify the flavors, which seems counterintuitive, but works for me.

Pretty sure every setup has collection jars that can be knocked over. One precaution I take, if you notice in the video, I keep my next empty jar on the boards, near the edge with the updraft of warm air. That way you're not putting hot product into a freezing cold jar. Because that would be bad. If...
