Re: My first still build
Hey patch . Those ferrules look interesting . They look like a 2” SS ferule that had been TIG welded to a copper coupling . But that’s where I think the issue is . The coupling looks like it’s designed to fit some USA or UK copper pipe ….. not Aussie stuff . …. And that is why you have such a bad as...

Re: Worm condenser without electricity or tap water
If it helps , you need at minimum 2x the volume of water in your Flake stand compared to how much is in your boiler . 3x is better So iff’n you had 10 gal of mash or wash in your boiler , you’ll need about 20gal of water in your worm and flake to get the run done . If you can do that straight up , y...

Re: Scotch in plastic
I can accept on a personal level , that GNS could quite safely be stored and transported in PET and HDPE containers as they have very good Chemical resistance to 95% ABV Ethyl Alcohol . However , I find it questionable if the same resistance applies to all the Congeners and Esters that are present i...

Re: Making cuts guessing game
Ignore the Temperature …..for now . You have 48mm ID , thats close enough to 2” . The trick to running these stills is to adjust the valve to get a certain takeoff rate . In the case of a 2” , it has been found to be no higher than 1l/hr for hearts . Take off any faster and the quality will dramatic...

Most of the tails will end up in the boiler. But be very assured that they will come across when their turn is ready. . VM stills will slowly reduce output as the run progresses , but just like all reflux stills , there is a point where there is almost no Ethanol left in the column packing and the n...

15ml cuts . That is ridiculously small. …… you must have dozens and dozens if them . Do you mean 150ml jars . That would be more practical OK , si you have experienced the horrific taste of tails from a Reflux still . Remember that taste . It will never leave you .Every time you change a jar when yo...

Well not quite , you didn’t add enough Yeast .
Did you use a Pressure washer to aerate the wash ?……. or other method to significantly aerate before adding Yeast ?
What Molasses did you use ?

Onya JJ Sounds like you are doing OK .Yeah , the Thumper is a joke , you not missing much . Just be careful not to boil a mash with grains in it . Re: Distilling without power or running water
If you are running a simple pot still, passing clouds will interfere with production, but that doesn't cause smearing, it just takes longer and is a PITA if you are in a hurry to get it done and go to the pub. We use 12V water heater elements directly connected to second hand solar panels to heat h...

We have just had the old 3kw solar system (which was next to useless) replaced with an 8kw one . Here are some pics of production . This is the best one I could find out of the 53 days it’s been installed .You can still see where a couple of clouds come across but it is the most consistent. IMG_0084...

I know a commercial distillery that has about 5 or 6 IBCs as fermenters . They have an insulated room . You know the things made out of clad polystyrene sheet used for cool-rooms etc .
Are you commercial ? Sounds like a lot of fermentation

What Otis said . But if you can get 2.5l/hr on that 10plater that tastes OK , then be happy . @5 l/hour it will taste horrible .Like Salty said , it just drags tails through . If you pulled all the plates out and packed it and made it about 2metres tall , and had about 8kw in the boiler and access t...

Silicone rubber compound is inert and not known for leaching. They use the same material in plugs for lab equipment, not that means crap. If it was inert then these Silicone Rubber teats on our Dropper bottles would not have disintegrated . IMG_0077.jpeg IMG_0078.jpeg Silicone rubber is not compati...

My thinkin behind the annealing really was to make it easier to flare reducing the risk of damaging the other end of the pipe and you could re harden the copper. It will reharden as you bend and hammer it . Also thought about silicone seal using baking mats wifey gave me some old ones, again worth ...

I add it to the next Spirit run …..but thats me .
If you are stripping wash looking for a combined total ABV , ( IE , you keep stripping until the Low wines gets to a certain point ) adding Feints in with the Wash will stuff up the readings .

A silicone teat would be acceptable to use if you are Steam stripping with water in the boiler . The Teat would only be exposed to 10%ABV or less which we consider safe . However , you put clear Mash in the Boiler and slops in the Thumper . The ABV coming out of the Boiler and passing through the Te...
