Re: My First Malted Corn Ferment

Thanks Biker. Downloading the Beersmith app now. I mashed the corn at 150 F (or very close to 15 F) for 90 minutes. However I did not bring the water up to temp first. I put 4 lbs of malted corn meal into the pot then added 2 gallons of 110 F water and (very slowly) brough it up to 150 F. I was surp...

Re: My First Malted Corn Ferment

Thanks Ronin. I was pleased with the way it turned out considering it was my first time working with copper. Thanks for the tips for sanitizing. I just a little bleach and water, let it sit for a while then rinsed it out really well. I've got it in the fermenter now and it's seems to be going pretty...

Re: Pacific Ocean water

That's pretty interesting. Using a "sun still" do make sea water/bad water/urine drinkable is a pretty standard survival technique. That's obviously a rudimentary method utilising the sun's heat and condensation to separate water from the other crap that might be mixed together with it. So...

Re: My First Malted Corn Ferment

So my first attempt at malted corn fermentation was a failure. As Prariepiss pointed out, I didn't mash the malt. Also, I know realize that I added the yeast without letting the mixture cool. I was confused and hadn't realized that no boiling didn't mean that I didn't need to mash. I THINK I get it ...

Re: My First Malted Corn Ferment

Yeah, I avoided the word mash because I was pretty sure I hadn't. It's a bit frustrating because I thought that if I malted, I didn't have to mash? I'm realizing that's prob not the case. What's also frustrating is that I know all the info I need is here in these forums somewhere but I've read so mu...

My First Malted Corn Ferment

Got a fair amount of feed corn to sprout and got it dried. Now am attempting to ferment with bread yeast. I've got no added sugar and I didn't heat the corn at all. Just took the dried to rock hard corn that I had malted (and by malted I mean that I had probably 4 out of 10 kernels sprouted), ground...

Re: My first lead free solder experince

Just finished my first still today. I'd never soldered a thing in my whole life. It was a 5 gallon all copper kit and there was a good deal of soldering to do. I used a propane hand torch and of course lead free solder. It's not as easy as it looks but it's all about practice, I guess. The boiler do...

Yeah, similar to what I've been doing...only my next batch I am going to try and grind wet like you've described. Thanks Geronimo.

Re: Malted Blue Corn Mash (Some Questions)

Yeah, the corn I am using is simple feed corn. I don't know much about it. Next time i'll have to ask the guy at the feed store what he knows about it. But like I said, I don't need 100% germination. I'm just going to grind it all up and see what happens. I'm not using the bucket method to germinate...

Re: Malted Blue Corn Mash (Some Questions)

I'm currently engaged in my second effort to malt feed corn. The weather for this effort has been considerable cooler so I'm hoping it still works. Despite the fact that I didn't get a very high percentage of the grain to germinate the first time I was still satisfied with the result and it's now co...

Re: Malted Blue Corn Mash (Some Questions)

Thanks Geronimo, that's what I figured. I was motivated by your post to try and pursue the wild yeast angle. I was just surprised by how much activity I got from corn that wasn't malted. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Malted Blue Corn Mash (Some Questions)

Hey guys. Thanks for the great post Geronimo. I malted my first batch of corn recently (about 10 or 12 lbs out of a 50 lb sack). Soaked it 2 days then kept it moist in a burlap sack, agitating it regularly until it sprouted and grew to the desired point. I got what I would reckon to be about 35-45% ...

Re: My First Post and I am Thrilled to be here.

Can anyone recommend the best way to search for topics and at what point I should just post any questions I have? I feel like I have been searching through corn malting/fermenting related posts for days. I've read a lot but not found anything specific to my situation. I'm sure the answers I seek are...

My First Post and I am Thrilled to be here.

Hello everyone. I've done my best to familiarize myself with this forum before introducing myself. I have found this forum very helpful. I hope to someday be able to offer as much advice as I have read here. I'm a guy in my mid thirties living in the UK. I'm originally from South Texas. I've always ...
