Re: Oaking, Aging, Filtering

I have searched and found very little on aging... Especially on the main site... Anyhow.. So one thing I wonder is.. If you nuke a whiskey and get some oak flavor in it, then you jar it and put it up, will it change? I say "change"... Will it mellow? Could it improve? Will the throat burn ...

Oaking, Aging, Filtering

Tell me if I'm on the right track here.. Oaking, simply infuses a woody taste to your spirit. Aging, time chemically changes the alcohol making it "mellow" if you will. As wine does? Filtering, removes flavor? So.. If you were to heat your spirits and steap on oak, aka this so called nucle...

UJSSM ( How Long )

I was unsure where to post this so excuse me if I stuck it in the wrong place. I read the UJSSM thread till I'm blue in the face and have not found the answer to this question. How long do you all keep her going? I think I got 7-8 runs then it slowed down, WAY SLOW! So do you all raise the PH with s...

What about in the UJSSM thread where he recommends very generic cuts 160-140.
And also whiskey MUST be collected under 160 proof. Does anyone practice this?

I stripped (2) 12 gallon washes giving me 8 +/- gallons 80 proof low wines with very little tails.
Also added 2 gallons of very heady spirits.

Re: Heads

Correct me if I'm wrong... But I'm most certain I read somewhere on this forum that feints "pronounced (Faints)" is actually Tails, not heads and tails combined. This is why I keep asking this question... How much good likker could possibly be in the heads. Also, why are we collecting fore...

Re: Heads

Otis, Keep all the heads and tails to run in a all feints run or dump them back in on your next run. I think you may need to do a little more research on making proper cuts. You cant rely on just a thermometer to make your cuts. This was discussed in you other thread. I have read that some folks to...

Re: UJSSM "Frusterated"

Took a while but here's what I got. I am using a 15.5 gal keg, 3" x 18" pot still head, 24" water jacket condenser, 5500 watt element. I charged my boiler with 7-/+ gal strippins, 3 -/+ gal "heady spirits" for a total of 10 -/+ gal of 80 proof. I collected all spirits in pin...

Alright...

I have my boiler charged with 10 gallons of low wines (80 proof)
Ready to go, all I have to do is flip the switch.
I will run this in the AM, I will keep detailed notes and let you all know the outcome!

Thanks!

Re: UJSSM "Frusterated"

Yes.. Here in Mayberry we don't add to good.. I will strip 12 gallons at a time and prolly get 3 gallons at 40%-50% per strip. On my spirit run, it will start at 85%. I am using a 3" pot still. Now, GA, are you saying you collect 160-120 proof as hearts, or is there heads to be removed below 16...

UJSSM "Frusterated"

Ok, I'm getting frustrated with the cuts!

I have been stripping (2-3) 15 gal washes then running a 10-12 gal spirit run.
I have not looked at the proof while running.

If I make "Generic" cuts as stated in the UJSSM post, 160-140, am I guaranteed "Decent" cuts at the least?

Making Cuts

Alright. I have ran several batches of UJSSM in my 3" pots still. I can easily notice the heads, hearts and tails. Now.. My last spirit run was 8 gal low wines, 1 gal previous heads, 1/2 gal previous tails. I collected in pints, the likker started running at 85%, I collected about 38 pints, the...

Ok, been running this UJSSM...
How much clean spirits are in a gallon of heads?

It seems if I add a gallon of heads to my next run, I get twice as much heads on the next run.
Seems as if I am wasting my time?

Your thoughts?

This may have already been discussed, if so I'm sorry. I am using Nuwave's SSRMAN 1-P. I was instructed to set all dip switches to the off position when controlling with a pot. I have 240vac supply and was only getting 200 out of my relay at full power. I called tech support and was informed to turn...

By far my favorite!

Simply pour 100 proof over fresh strawberries and let sit a week or so.
I personally, then strain into a different jar.
Unbelievably smooth and fresh!

Clean Quick Buzz

I've had friends say, I have seemed to notice as well...

All my homemade likker seems to give a quick buzz, then it's gone..
Does this make any sense?
I drink store bought whiskey or beer and the buzz lingers.

I've been reading on all grain mashes..
Right off, I read its best not to use internal elements.

Well... I have built my small operation around a heating element.
So should I call it quits?

Do any of you guys use an element?

Re: Electric Heater

I just bought a Broil King 1500w heater off Amazon as recommended by the Clawhammer site. I did a water test and it takes about 2hr 15min to get it to 185degrees from 76degrees. I also located the proper lower setting to keep it at that temp. I'm running a 5gal milk jug pot with a concave base and ...
