Antler, I don't know how much Star San costs, I am sure it is safe but have you ever wet a rag with vinegar and dumped salt on it then rubbed your copper still? Vinegar and salt paste work wonders on copper.

Re: Sharing stainless work connecting cap to boiler.

If you can't find Harris StayClean, which is the gold standard, Oatey liquid flux will work. If that fails muratic or hydrochloric acid will do the job, but be careful. You have to have Internet access in the UK right? I am positive they have welders there :eh: a welding shop can get this.

I use a copper ring wrapped in PTFE I used to use everlasting gaskets but don't like how the cardboard seems to get wet and soft. There is also a soft PTFE seal that Bearriver used that was great but kind of expensive. You mention that the cardboard gets wet and soft when wrapped with PTFE tape. Wo...

Since ptfe is teflon, glue does not stick to it. It cannot have an adhesive back for this reason. Buy some and you will see.

What Cranky just pointed out is impressive. I know I tried a SS floor drain cover once and it flooded. I just have a grid made from soldering 2 Guage wire criss cross. It is only three in each direction so it is quite open. Just big enough so large lava rocks don't fit through then smaller ones on t...

I replaced it with a lower micron screen. You are measuring the part holding up your packing in microns and still wondering why your column is flooding. You know a sieve plate on a column has hundreds of 1/16" holes and it holds a liquid bath with no packing dumping on it. I wonder how that co...

I use s distilled water because the well water minerals will cloud it. I did get one jug of supposed distilled water that clouded up some neutral. Switched to a different brand of water and didn't get any clouding with the same batch. Guess the water wasn't really distilled in that jug....

Re: 4" or 3" preference?

I get way better efficiency out of lava rocks than I ever did from mesh. You do have to break them up to the right size though. You should get to a neutral no problem with 48 inches but does that include the room over it you need for a reflux coil? Blue Fish is right, go 4 inch.
