Re: Needle valves for a Boka

The valves you are looking at are probably rated against leaks in a system that operates at 150 pounds per square inch. In a Bokakob you are talking about a liquid pressure which is negligible. I make needle valves with a stainless needle in a hole in a brass cap and they do not leak. If I can do i...

Re: Needle valves for a Boka

Wouldn't metal on metal leak, especially if for gases, which need a tighter seal than liquid?

Needle valves for a Boka

I'm building a 2" boka head for a modular still and I'm currently sourcing the needle valve from a commercial supplier. I explained what I wanted to the sales rep, and yes, all good they have stainless in 3/8 and 1/4". The rep knows what I want it for, and he asked their supplier about com...

HETP - How accurate are Ackland's calcs?

Some fairly impressive maths on the parent site from Tony Ackland around column heights, theoretical plates and HETP. I've read through it a number of times and believe I have a good handle on it. I'm embarking on a 2" column keg boiler based rig build, with a boka head to start. So , again I l...

Re: New Zealanders -

NZChris - did you sample the rum I sent you? Me and mine have been guzzling it, the small bottling run won't go far at this rate. The Oregon oak 'planks' were split with a hatchet into thirds, 2 as is and 2 charred per 5L carboy of UJSSM. Coloured up quick, smells delish...time will tell ; ) SWMBO w...

Birdwatchers, a hat tip and a dissection.

Hi all, BW was the first non turbo I ran and is likely the wash that kept me in the hobby. All credit to the BW, and reading(most of) the voluminous thread, one can see the evolution of the recipe and methodology. It's simplicity is it's genius, and as such , this is what has me thinking..... Thread...

Re: Reminder to all

TB, those are 2 very good tips to point out. The boiling chips always stuck out to me, so I've used them from the get-go. Your 0 to boil time is same as mine 1hr 15min. I've yet to build the shroud. I've been using boiling chips in bottom heated vessels in Science Labs since I was 15 , I'm now 43.I...

Re: New Zealanders -

Do any of you know where to find sloes/blackthorn plants or fruit? I fancy adding sloe gin to my cellar. Doubt you'll find sloes in NZ, but your can get Damson Plumbs all over if you ask around - they are very similar in look and flavour, just a little larger and the plants are not prickly. If you ...
