Re: Concerns with my first test run - please help :/

Apologies, I mistyped while concentrating on the boiler happenings. I have a 15cm lead with normal household male plug coming off of the boiler. I have a 3m extension lead (normal household male and female on other end) And lastly, the controller - which is approx 50cm from male plug to box, and abo...

Re: Concerns with my first test run - please help :/

Using a cooking thermometer against the heat sink, it read at around 60 degrees. The water in keg was boiling at this point, so I figured the hard work was done, and in real life I can then turn down the amps and steady the heat? Warm is ok, as long as it stays safe...do we think it's safe? Thanks g...

Concerns with my first test run - please help :/

Hi all, I'm running a 50l keg boiler with a 3kw immersion attached to a power controller. I've had it running for around 20-30 mins and the keg is heating up, which seems positive. However - my plug, controller and cables are also getting warm. Is this dangerous? For the sake of testing, I'm running...

Re: Before I solder, any thoughts on set up?

I'm going to go with the twist and not include a union. (Against your advice) just because I'm now scrimping on some parts.
I understand what you're saying though.
I don't use my shed anyway, so storage ain't a problem ;)

Thanks everyone :)

Before I solder, any thoughts on set up?

Hi all, I'm about to solder my pot still but before I do, I wondered if anyone could offer their thoughts on my options... Re: UK recommendations for 54mm pipe to sanke connection

I've picked up a 64mm tri clamp and a matching ferrule today, and it appears that the ferrule and the keg connect very nicely.
I think I'm happy to go with that!

Thanks for your help all :)

Thanks, do you find the clamp fits nicely onto the sanke, or does it require the bottom ferrule?

Re: Found a UK supplier of threaded copper adaptors

Is the idea that you braize(.sp) the male to a keg, and then attach the female to your column, and then simply screw it on?

UK recommendations for 54mm pipe to sanke connection

Hi all, I'm from UK and I'm REALLY struggling to find suitable connectors for a 50litre sanke keg with a 54mm column. I'm planning to use the same keg and connector for a Pot a Still, aswell as a Boka. I did toy with soldering a 54mm coupler to the top of the keg, and then just dropping the column i...

Re: Urgent question re immersion heater fitting

Ferrule(flange?) is brass, so they've braised (.sp) the flange to the keg.
It looks good so far, but I collect the finished article this afternoon.
Will hand clean the weld carefully to ensure no flux remains.
I was more worried about the solder being lead free, which it is.

Re: Urgent question re immersion heater fitting

Hole is cut, and they were about the solder the flange when they suggested I find a stainless steel flange so it can be welded, bs the flux is toxic and needs to be cleaned really really well.

Can anyone advise on this?

Many in here say soldering is fine?

Re: Urgent question re immersion heater fitting

They cut the hole yesterday, and said they weren't using the plasma cutter, just a drill, as it'd be neater. I find out today whether a colleague can get me some (free) (legally sourced) 54mm pipe! (He says he can, but until it's in my hand I'm not getting too excited! It's surprising how quickly it...

Confused over Liebig length. (Sorry)

Hi all, I'm sorry about this, I know the answers are here, I'm just confused...!! I'm building a pot still on a 50l keg heated with a 3kw heater with controller. I planned to have 1metre of 22mm copper around a slightly longer 15mm take off tube. - water in the bottom, out the top, (usual method) I'...

Re: Lots of busts on u-tube

I think that people who use a propane burner to heat a still, inside an apartment without proper ventilation and with children around...deserve to go to jail.

This forum does not condone that practice.

People who make it safely and for personal consumption....That's a different story.

Re: I'm looking for a nice mead recipe

Hi all, I've been wine making for a couple of years now and one of my favourite recipes (ever) is Black Forest Melomel. For those who don't know, melomel is a form of mead which includes fruit to give it a different flavour. I use- 500g of frozen Black Forest fruits 3lbs honey (clear/cheap) 1litre g...

Re: Strawberry Wine

You need to use Pectolase to prevent hazing and to break down the strawberries. For future reference, don't heat fruit! Also, a dose of campden is good 24 hours before pitching yeast to kill off any wild yeasts. I recommend http://www.homewinemaking.co.uk/yabb2/YaBB.pl?catselect=General" onclic...

I've left it with the pro's now. They're gone plasma cut a hole for the flange, and another person will silver solder the flange in place. I think they're fairly sure about my needs :/ I did get the question "what's it being used for? A distillery?" "No, sir! Not me! It's a water tank...

Re: Urgent question re immersion heater fitting

image.jpg This shows what I mean. The space between the very bottom of the actual keg part, and the beginning of the lip is smaller than the size of the flange for the immersion heater Hope that makes sense?! Thanks Ps, this is a pic of the top of the keg, but it's the same at the bottom...just the...

Urgent question re immersion heater fitting

Hi all, My keg has rims on it, (about 1/3 up and 2/3 up the side) which act like wheels when the keg is rolled... I'm having my flange fitted today, but I'm worried about position. If I fit the immersion heater between 1/3 and 1/2 way up the side of the keg, is it too high? I presume it's best as lo...

I have a 3kw heater and a 50l keg. I know it's not that powerful, but once it's up to temp it should be loads. If it's really slow I might add a secondary heater later on. I like the idea of having a box with a plug socket to plug the heater into. I also like the idea of having the digital display t...

Re: Heating Element Control

If I built another, I would order: - a cheap SSR mounted to heat sink, - a smaller PVC junction box, - a female outlet (I love the ability to plug into the controller instead of having long cable attached to both sides. - a pot - and a master on/off switch Those parts and some short lengths of wire...

Re: Maturing a wash (before distilling)

I'm geographically located in a country that doesn't have much temperature fluctuation, and can generally ferment all year round.

I've just got some equipment (vessels) that are surplus to requirement, so figured I could age some wash in them.

I think I'll give it a go with some neutral.
