Re: black beer kegs
I manage a bar, and the only black kegs that I have seen are not suitable for use as a boiler. I'm not sure exactly what they're made of, but they're some sort of rubber or plastic, and I don't believe there is any metal in them. If I were you I would stick to the standard stainless steel.

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
I started out using whiskey yeast with Amyloglucosidase (AG). Does the AG also keep rejuvenating along with the yeast? No, it won't. AG is an enzyme, which means it is non-living and cannot reproduce like the yeast does. Chances are that you lost all the AG in the wash after your first generation. ...

Some Observations and Questions After First Stripping Runs
So I've done three stripping runs already, two ujssm and one rum. I've noticed a few things that seem out of the ordinary and I was wondering about them. First, I know that the distillate coming out of the condenser is supposed to drip or flow at a constant pace. Mine doesn't. It will flow for a bit...

Re: Mashing Corn, First Time Distilling
So I just got done running water and wine through the still. After some adjustments everything is up and running like a charm. I ended up scrapping the thin mixing bowl i had and opting for a pot with a thick copper coated bottom. I then used a Sil-fos rod to attach my arm to the pot. Tomorrow I hop...

Re: Mashing Corn, First Time Distilling
So, tomorrow I'm going to run my still for the first time. Water first, to check for leaks, then some cheap wine to clean it out with. After that I have two washes ready to be ran. My ujsm has finally finished, and I also have 5gal of Pintoshine's Fast Fermenting Molasses that will be done. I'll pro...

Re: Aluminum boiler. Good or Bad???
Is it ok to use regular steel in a still? I have a keg pot still, and I have welded a short steel nipple to the top of my mixing bowl. I did this because I could not get my solder to stick to the stainless, so instead I soldered a threaded copper piece to my arm, and then screwed that to the nipple....

Re: uncle jesse's simple sour mash method
Hi So I started my first batch of ujsm about 3 days ago. I used 5lbs of 6 row malt, 9lbs of cornmeal, 14lbs sugar and 10gals water. I pitched this with Premier whiskey yeast. When I first mixed everything up a lot of junk came to the top. From what I've read, this seems normal. I'm wondering though,...

Re: Cobbing together a keg potstill, how to attatch lyne arm?
Hey jack- Did you have the water circulating through the bucket, or was it static? I've seen pictures of condensers made with buckets and other plastic vessels. If you didn't have fresh cold water running through it I know it will heat up quickly. I'll try it the way I have it, keeping an eye out fo...

Re: Assembling my first still
Well I plan on making whiskey and brandy, so I'm building a pot still. I'm going the keg route also. So far I have built my arm and I have cut a hole in the keg. Now I just need to attach the arm to a ss mixing bowl. This will then go over the hole in my keg. I'm going to weld or braze some bolts to...

Re: Mashing Corn, First Time Distilling
use what you have... Thats what I'm going to do, junkyard dawg. Tonight I finished my lyne arm and I cut the hole in my keg. The mixing bowl that I am using is 8'' across so I made a 7'' hole in the keg. Now I just need to attach the arm to the bowl and the bolts to the keg. Then I'll use washers a...

Re: Mashing Corn, First Time Distilling
So the stage is set! I mixed up a 10gal batch of ujsm tonight. I used 5lbs of malt, 9lbs of cornmeal and 14lbs of sugar. I mixed the grains in slowly so as to not get clumps. Then I pitched it with two packages of Premier whiskey yeast. The cornmeal that I used it awfully fine, so I think that next ...

Re: Cobbing together a keg potstill, how to attatch lyne arm?
Hahaha yes, I do worm. I'm starting to get a little spent out, so I'm thinking that for now mebbe I'll stick with the 3/4 and in the future upgrade to a larger diameter arm and condenser. Does this sound reasonable? Ideally everything would be- well, ideal- but in reality I have to consider my budge...

Re: Cobbing together a keg potstill, how to attatch lyne arm?
I haven't cut the top yet but I want to use the bowl because I want to have a nice big opening to clean it. I'll put a picture of my condenser below this. Its made out of 3/8'' copper so that was my reasoning behind taking the copper dimensions down to 3/8''. I didn't realize that it would be too sm...

Re: Mashing Corn, First Time Distilling
I was planning on going with the bowl method. How do you attach the pipe to the bowl though? It has to be 2'' you say? I was hoping 3/4'' would be enough. Do you know if I could still use what I made already or should I just put it aside and start new?

Cobbing together a keg potstill, how to attatch lyne arm?
So I'm in the process of building my first still out a an old keg that I have. I've seen instructions for mounting a column onto the keg, but I really just want an arm. Plus, I think that the arm I would like to use will act kinda like a column. So my question is, how should I attach the arm to the ...

Thanks a lot for that link Hack, those photos do help, especially the ones of your still. Thats the way I think I'll do mine. Junkyard dawg- I'll put pictures of the still up once I finish it. Thanks also for the encouragement. Now that I am going to do a ujssm, I have some questions about that! 1. ...

Re: Mashing Corn, First Time Distilling
i would still build the rig then run a few simple washes to learn and make cuts. personaly i would rather learn on something easy rather spend a bunch of work then scorch it or miss my cuts find the leaks in the still ...you get the jist. ujssm is fine made from corn meal or any other grain. crawl,...

Thanks for the replies guys. I know that I posted a lot of questions, they're the results of reading through as much info as I could find. Mashing Corn, First Time Distilling
Hi- I've just joined today after reading up about distilling for a few weeks. A friend of mine and I are getting ready to try our hand at making whiskey. I have already purchased the cornmeal and 5lbs of 6 row malt is on its way from Brewhaus. The recipe I'm planning on using calls for 10lbs of grai...
