i pressed sealed bearings into the oak sides then pressed the spindle into the bearings. sealed bearings are only a few bucks.

i made a pusher or plunger. it is around a half inch smaller than the apple hopper and has a stop so it stops around an inch above the shredding wheel. if you push on it the apples disapear almost instantly. if you set it on top the weight of it grinds them at a good clip. it is much faster than not...

the drum is a very heavy large piece of stainless. with three people we can grind and press a 6 foot pickup truck bed filled to the top with apples in a day.

i have a homemade electric apple grinder that eats 6 to 12 whole apples (depending on size) in 5 to 10 seconds but cant post pictures on this site, but if anyone wants i will email them pictures to post. i can take measurments if someone is serious about building one.

would hydrogen peroxide work? i know it helps in my hydroponic nutrient tank. it seems to kill every thing but the plants. they seem to like it and thrive. it fixes a lot of problems for me. there is a lot of info on using it on the web.

i stick copper scrubbers in the inside pipe. you just have to make sure they are not restricting the flow to much. you can run stripping runs much faster.

do the same thing then rub the outside with black pepper after it is brined and smoke it and put it in the fridge for a day or three wraped in saran wrap. it will make a pastrami that is fantastic. i have been halving jalipino peppers from the garden for the last three days to freeze for atomic buff...

you can open up the end of a pipe with a small bladed knife because it is so soft. lay the blade flat inside the pipe and slowly turn the pipe with light pressure. you wan't a blade that is not to tall and smoothe. it will take out a chip and will take a while but it works well.
