Grain Guard

I know the topic has been talked about here and there but I couldn't find any discussion about how they performed. Does anybody have any experience with distilling on the grain while using a grain guard for your electric element? Here is what I'm referring to... http://www.hillbillystills.com/produc...

Thought you gents running this might appreciate my setup,it helps pretty substantially.http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 50&t=62105

Also, if any of your corn gets ridiculously thick, you might try a high temp alpha amylase. Works wonders.

Re: Tired of stirring? All grain mixer.

Thanks Hound Dog, working on a "cider press" to save me some time as well. (straining mash through nylon bags is getting old) Once everything is dialed I figure i'll do a write up of my whole all grain process.

Tired of stirring? All grain mixer.

I got tired of using a drill to stir when corn thickened up, stepped it up a little. IMAG0367.jpg Thats the whole set up, bayou burner / pot, old drill press I got at a garage sale, simple stand, I routed out a spot for a "window" I also have an immersion chiller I made to drop temp after ...

Re: Cheap copper for immersion chiller

Make sure you get the stainless S hooks if they are going to touch any liquid. Edit- make sure the mixer doesnt have a zinc coating or anything dangerous as well. The jiffy mixers are all ss Doing all grain right now, about to drop corn from 190 to 150 for malts. Ill let ya know how it fairs. I also...

Re: Slow AG ferment

Went about as expected. Everything ran fine and no off flavors or anything. But those few % definitely make a difference in total product. Being that it was a test run I started with 6 gallon on the grain ferment. After grain was strained 4 gallons left. Still workin on a good method for this. Start...

Yea you are correct it's from making pure corn whiskey, I wanna say it's referenced on the parent site. Yea I've been tasting along the way and judging from that I think it's finished. Slow AG ferment

Grain bill is 8.5 lb corn meal 2.75 barley 2,25 rye .5 wheat flake. Amylase. 7.5 gallon water to boil down to 5. Starch test suggested full conversion. 15 g distillers yeast. Starting gravity 1.065 bubbled like crazy the first 36 hrs or so and gradually slowed too around twice a minute. Looks like t...

That's what guy at monster said too, bought a cheap corona and with some minor tweaks I think it should do fine. I'll save the mill for my other grains

Tweaking the hopper a little to perfect the feed. Crushes all normal brewing grains amazing. Corn is a little more of a challenge du...

Re: Treadmill motor?

Flywheel won't budge after trying everything under the sun to get it off. However, its steel. So I'm debating welding a coupling that will accept the 1/2 shaft. I'll use the speed control to adjust rpm, in theory, eliminating the need for a pully. If it does not work, I could also weld a pully strai...

Re: Treadmill motor?

After doing some research it appears there are a few challenges that come with the motor. There is an awkward 17mm left hand thread on the shaft that holds a flywheel. The flywheel runs a pully but not a common vbelt so using it would be difficult. There are a few youtube videos of guys modifying th...

Re: Treadmill motor?

. This mill also comes with a much larger gap adjustment range of .160", more than double our standard range that should allow you to mill other grains like corn, as well as the conventional grist bills with barley.

Off the website. Talked to the owner and he said I would be fine with corn.

Re: Treadmill motor?

Yea I know the hp is a little high for a mill but I figured since I'll be crushing corn as well it wouldn't hurt. I think I should be able to just use the speed adjusting right from the panel off the treadmill too. You guys with your other ideas for it have me thinkin I might need a few of these.
