The grain on top molded, the already drained wart seemed fine. If it gets funky, out it goes.

Possibly Infected

In 8 years of making whiskey I think this batch of mash isn't going to work. My flaked corn was bad, I got some from the brew store, it was pretty grainy compared to what I usually use. It held the wort so I left it sit longer than I usually do - I was missing about 2 gallons. I smelled a smell toda...

Re: Fermenting in Brewzilla

I have the 17 gallon (65L) BrewZilla but only cook my grains in it. I use the pump to sparge, which has made a nice increase in my SG over my old pot. I use the screens to separate out the grain and ferment off the grain in a 6 gallon bucket. I, personally, wouldn't ferment in a $700 pot.

Re: Is the baker's yeast slower than brewer's/distillers yeast?

I agree with Still_Stirrin on the EC 1118. I'm a die-hard Fleischmann's user for my whiskey but use champagne yeast for my fruit ferments. I did a cherry brandy a few years ago and it turned out well on EC. My first try was with baker's and it was no bueno. I didn't like it, did a little research an...

Give us an update on the results.. Mars Two nights ago I started another round of mash, this time for the whiskey I usually make. I decided to make this with a good bit more wheat than what I usually do. I tried 5 Star anti foam, this morning there was no foam/mess. I added 4 drops and there's no f...

Re: Another dilution thread

Assuming that you are doing your calculations correctly and you temperature correct, there is no sugar involved and you are still 15% off, your alcometer is likely to be off by quite a bit. That has happened to me and trying to get the calculation right seemed impossible, but the problem was that t...

Such a difference only matters if you're planning to sell your liquor. I would agree in most cases that I make liquor. Traditionally, Italians put Limoncello in the freezer and serve it cold, At 30% or less it'll freeze. Finding a balance of low alcohol and not freezing is where I'm at. I'd like to...

I'm hoping I'm putting this in the right place. Feel free to move it. After 7-8 years of making whiskey pretty much the same way I decided to try some new things. I found this thread while searching for feedback on temps using Fleischmann's, very interesting to read about how much higher temps ppl are using with this yeast. Re: Wheat Foam

But the best way to reduce foaming overall is to use anti-foam, plus giving the ferment some head space.. on a 6 gal batch you need at least 4 - 5" space when using anti-foam.. this is the one I use, and works very well... the grains will cap but will not foam.. https://brewhaus.com/anti-foam-...

If you would have boiled your wort in the kettle while brewing (before transfer to the fermenter), you could have skimmed much of the proteins off, as it creates a lot of foam as you reach the boil. Having brewed beer for nearly 30 years now, I’ve seen a lot of “hot break” foam and wheat is definit...

Running a new 4-plate bubble column

I recently bought a 4-plate bubble column from China. I make all-grain whiskey a couple times a month on my pot still and thought I'd start trying something new so, for $300, what the heck. I ran it last week, stripped 2-6 gallon buckets of my usual AG through the old pot still then ran it through t...

Re: Brewzilla/Robobrew opinion

I run the robobrew 3 for beer. Have done many batches and am pretty satisfied with the performance. Cleanup is a snap and it saves space and time. Two things: heating the initial water is a bit slow at 1500 w, so i tend to use propane and a 10 gal pot to get started. And the addition of a sight glas...

Take a look at the anvil foundry. The pump is external. I like it Thanks, diesel! I looked this up and like it. Brewzilla/Robobrew opinion

I usually make 2-12 gallon batches of all-grain mash a month, have been doing this for 6-7 years. I heat using a 10 gallon modified pot on propane then carry that into my nerd-cave to mash-in. It's kind of a bitch with hitting the right temps, carrying boiling-temp water, adding more heat if needed....
