Re: Fire Extinguisher Recommendation

Could I suggest a big CO2 extinguisher? Not much distilling experience here but 30+ years in the fire service and also been welding & brazing in the shop since I was a kid. Been more than once I had an unexpected fire that had to be knocked down quick, and there always seemed to be a pan of kero...

Re: Jim Beam Black 8 yr old

I never smelled any pickles in it but then nothing surprises me from these commercial places. I used to knock back a fair bit of JBB back in the day. Then was away from it awhile...it went from "Aged 7 Years" & 90p to what it is now. And IMHO another year older (if it is) did it no goo...

Re: Half run evaporated

Humidity will affect it as much as temperature, higher RH it won't evaporate near as much even in hot weather, the air already being pretty well saturated. If it was real low RH where he is and a hot day, it could happen...just sayin'.

Re: A little corn...

Yeah we moved about 30,000 bushels to the elevator last week with 2 old tandem trucks (1 bu. = 56 lbs nominal; this stuff has been running 59-61 lbs/bu). Got another 15K or so to go but various things keeping us from doing much with it this week. Several times watching it load or dumping @ elevator ...

A little corn...

Just some eye candy for you AG folks! Been helping a neighbor get his stored corn hauled in. Snapped this with the flip phone the other day when the sun was (sort-of) out. Pardon the poor quality.

oldgrouch62, my comments were not targeted directly towards you but to anyone reading this topic who may be feeling the same frustrations... Keg theft is a major concern as far as the bottom line for many breweries and there have been several topics as well as links to articles about the problem po...

Re: Comment about finding a keg

The problem you are encountering is due to the fact that the distributor does not own the kegs... They belong to the beer brewer stamped into the keg, whether Coors, Budweiser, etc... They are the only ones who can legally sell a keg unless if has been decommissioned... And for the guy to tell you ...

Re: Comment about finding a keg

Well, I have zero breweries, that I can find at least, within a hundred miles of me. And there is just one brew shop in easy driving distance. But I will look into that as well, and I thank you both for the advice. May be a road trip in my future. Or maybe I am just being too stingy and/or paranoid ...

Comment about finding a keg

The keg boiler is the only thing I haven't sourced yet. Slowly gathering parts as I continue the "read till your eyes bleed" aspect. Earlier this week I made it to a distributor who had told me on the phone that they "had a few kegs they might consider selling." When I showed up ...

Kegs acquisition can be a strange thing. You will hunt for 8 weeks, and get nothing, then in 2 days, 3 of them will end up in your lap from 3 unrelated people. They are out there, and will show up givin time. Story of my life. If I'm not interested in something there's hundreds around; soon as I de...

I tried it awhile back and was not all that fond of it. Actually felt and tasted as if it had metal filings in it! Ran some through a coffee filter just to see if I was imagining things...apparently I was, for nothing was caught in the filter and the result still felt almost sandy in my mouth. Very ...

Evan Williams Black. It's always on sale somewhere and oddly it's the only store bourbon that doesn't give me a hangover. Not the greatest tasting stuff but not bad or rough either. I am at a loss but not unhappily so! :P

Re: Score! 55 gal SS drum for $10

The old man I used to get corn liquor from had some of these. He cooked and fermented in 'em. When I said something about how he kept 'em from rusting was when he explained that they were stainless...they'd had ketchup shipped in them, according to him. That was the one time he let me see his set-up...

Re: Experienced corn Malters WANTED!

Not all corn growers take it straight to the mill. Most I know have their own bins. And store it up. Or at least part of it. So they can either use it for feed. Or sell it for a better price later. That is true, if a farmer keeps livestock, he'll probably store corn, but even if no livestock, most ...

Re: Experienced corn Malters WANTED!

Just my 2 cents, my family used to farm and while we don't do it anymore we still own some ground and I try to keep up with things... Corn that has been dried at high temps won't sprout at a high percentage; high heat will often "kill" the germ. If you can find a farmer who will sell you a...

Re: Iron

I run my well water through 2 filters for fermenting. The water passes through a 5 micron sediment filter first and then passes through a .5 micron carbon filter which cleans it up pretty good. Also, the water I use bypasses the softener. filters.jpg I had something real similar at the other place....

I would say a good rule of thump is. If its staining your clothes and or fixtures (sink, toilet, bathtub). You probably have to much iron in it. And if it was coming through in your beer. Then you have to much. Bottled spring water would be a good choice. Filtering may it maynot help. I had a well ...

Thanks for the replies, that puts my mind at ease considerably. I realized then that the ...
